ETCS failure Thameslink Core

Thameslink are reporting delays through the core due to a fault with the ETCS signalling. Does anyone know what exactly has gone wrong with it?

A fault with the signalling system at Farringdon means the southbound line through this station is disrupted. Trains may be delayed by up to 20 minutes.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer advice:

Thameslink services may be delayed on the southbound line through Farringdon station. There is an intermittent fault with the in-cab signalling control system in this area.

Some trains may be stopped at short notice, as the system is "failsafe". Because the route is so busy, congestion will build up quickly when this happens.

This affects trains heading from London St Pancras International towards London Blackfriars, then to Three Bridges, Brighton, Horsham, Rainham, Sutton, East Grinstead, Orpington or Sevenoaks.

When trains do stop, this may happen as they are departing Farringdon station. If you are onboard and you can still see the station platform, please remain on the train, as the service will continue as soon as possible. Also, if you are waiting on the platform, please stay behind the yellow line until your train has arrived and the doors have opened.

Thameslink will advise if you need to use another route for your journey, but you can currently use your normal route as planned.

You can see if your train uses this part of the network by checking the live map here.

Can you tell me more about the incident?

Network Rail are investigating a reoccurring fault with the in-cab signalling system in the Farringdon area. This has caused some delays over the last couple of days, and has since happened again. In-cab signalling replaces traditional trackside signals, and is designed to run services at a high frequency, whilst making sure each train remains a safe distance from the one in front.

The investigations into in-cab signalling faults are complex, and require specialist diagnostic work. We're closely monitoring progress.
