Good morning chaps,

A couple of quick questions if I may.

I was wondering whether the 10:30 VT Euston to Glasgow will be a 9 car or 11 car train. Even though I have advanced tickets, I was thinking of sitting in the unreserved carriages, especially if it's an 11 car train, as these are often quieter.

Presumably that's fine - am I right in thinking it's only E on a 9 car, and it's F and U on a 11 car?

Any idea how busy it will be?

Secondly, we're going back on the Monday, first class. 16:40 from Glasgow. Which is the unreserved coach in First, as presumably that will be very quiet - I'd like a big table, but with no one sitting with us!

Many thanks for your time answering.

James

These were both 11 car units when I caught them before.

Also, yesterday, those two services yesterday (1S52 and 1M17) were 390117 and 390135 respectively. I know one day wouldn't be an accurate account of the booked workings but even so!

They're not always unreserved either; the 1130 on Monday had F and U block booked out for a group (and a grumpy member of staff barring entry to anyone else).

Paul,

Many thanks for your kind and detailed answer.

Could someone fill me in, do you mean that sometimes they stick a couple of extra carriages in anyway, or will it definitely be a 9 car train?

Much obliged. Difficult to decide whether to stick with my seats or go unreserved - we just want to lessen the chance of being in a busy carriage where people sit next to us!

They won't 'stick a couple of extra coaches on'. They are fixed formations but it might be a 9 coach unit they throw out or it might be an 11 coach. It is booked as a 9 coach but as other people have said, it might be an 11 coach if they put one out from Edge Hill in the morning.

I say that you should go to your reserved seats and if you don't like them then sit elsewhere.

Have a nice trip.

I note that almost all Glasgow services where leaving Euston Full & Standing today as where many Anglo-Scottish services via the WMs. The ongoing driver issues are causing several to terminate at Preston this evening. No doubt tomorrows early Southbound departures will be affected by stock shortages.

Unreserved First Class in 11 car is Coach G. I regularly get the 1840 out of Central, it's always been an 11 for me and there's about six of us in G normally, very comfortable! Don't know about 1640.

Seems to have been getting a bit more common as I have been on 3 journeys recently where a carriage or more has been booked for a group. We've got 2 1/2 booked out for a work trip from Manchester to London and back later this month. Should be fine as they are off-peak, but it is a lot of capacity taken out if it is busy for whatever reason.
