Excessing a mobile ticket

Despite a few threads on this topic on the forum I don't see any clear answers.

Is it possible to excess a mobile ticket? Specifically in this case, excessing the return half of a ticket valid London Terminals-Birmingham Stations via High Wycombe to an Any Permitted, possibly also changing the time restriction from Super Off-Peak to Off-Peak.

Interested in what this looks like in practice as well as in theory.

In practice yes, it is possible to excess a mobile ticket. There's nothing in the T&Cs, nor in the NRCoT that excludes this. As I'm sure you've read elsewhere though, finding someone who either has the knowledge how to excess, or is even willing to excess, is a different matter entirely. Throw in the fact that it's a mobile ticket may leave you having to shop around...
