Any station that has less than 10 people per day travelling from/to it.

I would suspect IBM might eventually be downgraded from the roughly hourly service it currently enjoys to once/twice a day, but probably won't close as it will be too much paperwork involved.

Combe could be closed to allow easier re-doubling of the Cotswold Line. It's not in the village it is named after and Hanborough is very nearby, seeing as people have to drive to Combe anyway they might as well carry on a few minutes down the road to Hanborough. The same could possibly be said for Finstock as well, the platform is located on the old track bed.

10 per day, or per week?
Fewer than 10 per day and you would close a majority of stations on the Heart of Wales, and a good few on the Cambrian Coast and Far North lines.

Stations to (re)-open?
How about:
Montgomery Rd on the Cambrian
Soham
Fulbourn and Cherry Hinton (I mean as two different stations)
Sharnbrook (or Milton Earnest as Bedford North Parkway).
Rushden Parkway (on or near the site of former Irchester)

Actually, the first could be termed fantasy perhaps, but I think Rushden will happen within a decade once the Corby trains are electrified.

1. Close Marylebone (NR). The services to High Wycombe and beyond should be diverted to Paddington, which will have capacity once Cross-Rail opens. The Aylesbury-Amersham line should be electrified using 4th rail DC and run as an extension of the Metropolitan line (of which it once formed a part). Northolt Park, Sudbury Hill Harrow and Sudbury Harrow Road stations would be closed, with the Wembley Stadium station retained solely for special trains to/from Baker Street when there are events at Wembley Stadium.

2. Close Blackpool South to Ansdell & Fairhaven stations inclusive as heavy rail stations, and extend the Blackpool tramway from Squires Gate to Lytham as a replacement.

Oh dear. I must have entered a time-warp and woken up in 1980.
Or maybe it's daodao.

They don't. Many of Combe's (few) passengers cycle - there's no car parking there, in any case.

But I agree that, were this stretch to be redoubled, the expense of rebuilding Combe and Finstock wouldn't be worthwhile. I occasionally wonder whether the GWR should have opened a Stonesfield Halt in the 1930s (in the cutting by Ashford Mill) instead of Combe and Finstock.

Much as I am loathe to see any station close, for the greater good of redoubling, I tend to agree.

If this thread re-appeared in a few years, the wish list of re-openings might include many of the lines currently run by the Northern Fail franchise. I suspect that the haemorrhage of passengers from their services due to timetable chaos/cancellations/strikes will make many of the lines such basket cases, that no responsible government could avoid sanctioning their closure. Unlike in London, the car is a reasonable alternative for most journeys. I shall leave others to speculate about which lines cross my mind.

It really won’t have the capacity. They just closed one platform (P13) as part of the rework to allow for more and longer IETs to run from the suburban side of the station.

I would like Elland to reopen, and also a shout out to Kings Heath. Both on open lines so I believe these qualify.

Meanwhile in fantasy land I’ll have Ovenden, Holmfield and Queensbury. I’m prepared to compromise on not reopening Halifax North Bridge, as long as they utterly rebuild Halifax viaduct and two extra platforms at Halifax.

I’d like 2 new stations between Walsall and Bloxwich. A Leamore station on Bloxwich Road and a Walsall North station on Coal Pool Lane. It’s a deprived area with some regeneration work going on with new housing. Would allow the locals to access the employment boom in Birmingham city centre. The Chase Line is getting extra capacity with 350’s replacing 170’s when electrification is finished, but people from further up the line won’t like the extra stops.

It is really easy to say driving is an alternative when you have the privilege of a licence and a car. That isn’t the case for many people.

You might take the view that a 'responsible government' would try and promote rail use, rather than the endless slow-motion punch in the face which is pretending that increasing private vehicle use is a good thing. But then expecting this government to take a responsible attitude to transport or any other policy is like expecting people who post on rail forums not to be in favour of destroying the railways, including in their own parts of the country
