Just wondered if there were any (Preferably free) foreign equivalents to websites such as RealTime Trains or Traksy, particularly looking at Japan in particular.

Thanks for any help I can get!

Try these threads:

As far as I know the release of data down to track circuit level enabling websites such as Traksy is unique worldwide.

Possibly straying slightly off topic, the DB site giving train times & platforms has been offline for nearly a week.

The SBB counterpart was withdrawn a year or so ago. This is all in line with the trend towards "personalised" information and not providing an overview, but it is a right pain if you want to get an idea of all trains at a station. Is there a simple way of getting details of all trains at a station for some time in the future? There is realtime trains, in the UK and various sites in the Netherlands but little elsewhere.

Any thoughts?

DB turned off several older interfaces, including the old departure/arrival website, the text-based interface and their mobile website.

No other country anywhere has anything quite at the level that we have. I think the UK is very unique in having such a high level of detailed open railway data available. Things like RTT and OTT and Traksy are simply not possible in most other countries.

But there are a few countries that will let you track the locations of trains on maps and sometimes even see the unit numbers. Some also let you track buses or trolleybuses or trams or metros too. That is the closest that any other countries have. I have put together a list below of all of the useful sites that i have found so far ordered alphabetically by country name.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AUSTRALIA:

A live map that shows the unit numbers of trains and reg numbers of buses in most major Australian cities and regions. Note that for trains only the leading unit is shown. Trains in all Australian cities and regions can be formed of up to two units or even three units but only the leading one is shown. In the case of top and tailed XPT trains only the leading locomotive is shown.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AUSTRIA (OBB):

A live map that shows the locations of trains across Austria as well as some buses and trams and metros.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BELGIUM (SNCB/NMBS/NGBE):

If you search for any journey between any two stations on the journey planner then it will show the rolling stock class and formation of your train when you click on a service.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CANADA (LOCAL TRANSPORT):

This site can be used to track and see the unit numbers of buses and trams and metros in a couple Canadian cities.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CANADA (LONG DISTANCE):

This site can be used to track the Via Rail trains on a live map and see their current position.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CZECH REPUBLIC (CESKE BUDEJOVICE REGION):

A detailed live map showing the current positions of buses and trolleybuses and trams and trains within the Ceske Budejovice region and surrounding areas. It also shows the fleet numbers of buses and trolleybuses and trams. You can also track suburban trains and regional trains but the unit numbers are not shown.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CZECH REPUBLIC (OSTRAVA REGION):

A detailed live map showing the current positions of buses and trolleybuses and trams and trains within the Ostrava region and surrounding areas. It also shows the fleet numbers of buses and trolleybuses and trams. You can also track suburban trains and regional trains but the unit numbers are not shown.

Finally i have also included a selection of all of the excellent useful detailed websites for tracking trains here in the UK that we have.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So none of the other countries have anything quite at the level of us but these can still be very useful sites to find out more about your train.

If anyone knows of any other useful websites that i have missed off for any country then please do post and i will update this list.

A very convenient app for tracking buses, trams and metro's in the Netherlands is OVinfo. It currently doesn't have live tracking for trains unfortunately, but does give live departure information. You have to get used to its structure, but it also will show you all planned departures on a specific route at a specific day.

An example of the live tracking feature (also available on a map of the route):

But only shows the number of one XPT power car of a formation that I can see (presumably the leading power car?).

Yes it only shows the leading locomotive or leading unit unfortunately. So yes the XPT power car you see is the leading one. To see both power cars or both units you have to wait until it gets to the terminus and switches ends. If the formation has a middle unit then it will not be possible to see it at all.

This seems to affect everywhere in Australia and New Zealand that has data. I have noticed the same issue elsewhere.

Auckland has many 6 coach services formed of two units (3+3) but only the front unit is shown.

Wellington has many 8 coach services formed of four units (2+2+2+2) but only the front unit is shown.

I presume that is down to some limitation of the open data that they are using. Presumably the data is only available for the front unit in the formation.

It may be there is a GPS tracker (or similar) that is only live when the cab in that vehicle is live. Still much better than nothing - and as you say if you get the lead power car number going to (say) Melbourne, then it has to be the rear one coming back!

I am planning a journey to Germany and Switzerland and would like times of all trains (not buses) at a station on a particular day in the future. This used to be avilable on the DB & SBB websites but appears to have been discontinued. I have found a couple of enthuisists sites that does it for the Dutch railways but nothing elsewhere. Is there any site that this is available from?

Mod Note: As we've been seeing lots of threads of the same kind regarding this subject, we've decided to make this one a 'sticky' thread thanks to the comprehensive list of tracking sites provided by @stadler

Please utilise this thread if you have any questions regarding real-time tracking of services abroad.

I just came across this very useful site for the Brno region which i have added to my above list:

It lets you track and see the fleet number or unit number of all buses and trolleybuses and trams and trains in the area. It even works for all suburban and regional CD trains in the region. I had previously linked the main country wide CD tracking map but that lacks unit numbers so this is very useful.

For the trains it only shows the 2/3/4/5/6 digits of the unit number. The first digit is dropped. But it still enables you to easily identify the units and it will show both units when two are coupled.

This makes me wonder if any other Czech Republic regions have similar sites for tracking their public transport? Is it unique to the Brno region or could similar sites exist for other regions?

~ ~ ~ ~ Update on (17:20 on 18/06/2025) as posts on this forum are automatically merged. ~ ~ ~ ~

I have actually just now found some other similar tracking sites for other Czech Republic regions here:

It seems that multiple Czech regions do in fact have similar websites. The other ones do not show the unit numbers for trains. Only buses and trolleybuses and trams and metros show the fleet number. I am pleasantly surprised by how many detailed tracking sites that the Czech Republic has.

Thanks for putting together an incredible useful list.

One comment - so far as I can see the Positren map just shows timetabled rather than actual position.

The Adif (infrastructure operator) web site gives station arrivals and departures here which seems to include live as well as scheduled times.

For some reason it defaults to arrivals which keeps catching me out.

Oh that is very odd. What is the point of a live style map if it only shows the timetabled position rather than the real actual position. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of such a map.

Thank you very much for sharing that arrivals and departures site. That one is very helpful especially as it even shows the platform numbers. I have added that one to the list.

I think it's still quite interesting - and probably not trivial to set up - but certainly not as useful as a live map.
I suppose it also depends on how good timekeeping is. A non live map for Germany wouldn't be much use at all at the moment!

I came across it by accident and found it very useful. Happy to share the information...

In terms of real time information on delays, on the two occasions I saw it show a train that was running late one time it was correct but on the other the train was a bit earlier than the real time data suggested (which ended up with me taking a photo of the train through a fence which hadn't been my plan)

And I did keep getting caught out because it defaults to arrivals not departures.
