Out of curriosity from someone who lives in the area, does anyone have any details about exactly what type of freight is transported on the Sutton Park line these days; what is being transported, traction used, where its going from and to, how often it runs etc.......

Also, I've been told that there is a special steam working and a nuclear waste train that uses the Sutton Park line every Sunday.

I regularly work trains along the route, from Crewe to Bardon Hill and Stud Farm, plus sometimes we take light engines that way back to Crewe if the Trent Valley is shut or busy. FLHH 66s are our usual steeds, but there is one working with a Crewe driver which brings a 70 that way (to Stud Farm).

In the Summer it's a nice bit of railway, especially the long straight section going up to Streetly with the tall trees on either side. At night though it's quite spooky...

Hope that helps ;)

So is it more than just coal going to and from Rugeley power station and containers using Hams Hall that use the line?

And what about the nuclear and steam workings?

I'm led to believe that 6M67 13:02 Bridgwater to Crewe nuclear flasks and possibly the 6M56 12:41 Berkeley to Crewe nuclear flasks (and presumably their outbound workings) make use of the Sutton Park line, though as far as I know these services do not ever run on a Sunday.

The only regular steam working in the West Midlands is the "Shakespeare Express" from Snow Hill to Stratford every Sunday, which has no use for the Sutton Park line, though there are occasional sporadic railtours that would make use of the Sutton Park line.

As well as the coal and container trains, the Sutton Park line also sees a lot of light engine movements and a range of engineers trains.

Hve you any idea regarding roughly how many trains an hour use that line and do they run through the night?

Not sure how often they run during the night but I've heard them in the part nearest me during the night if it's quiet.

Thinking of buying a house? ;)

The reason I ask is because I regularly get letters and emails from anxious
house buyers asking about night time freight movements on lines because
they don't believe a word of what the estate agents/current owners have
told them!!!

I am thinking about buying a house in the area, but it's not somthing I'm majorly worried about.

I spent most of my childhood living in a house 100 yards from a line where freight trains used to run though the small hours every night. And this was back in the days of joineted track. There was also a small foot crossing about half a mile further up the line from us, although not all of the trains used to sound their horns, especially at night.
