Saw a Grand Central class 180 at Bradford Interchange today - but noticed that nowhere on the unit does it display the unit number - only the individual carriage numbers. Is there any reason why?

Also, it was stabled at Interchange for a good couple of hours whilst I was there - anyone know what service it was running?

The unit number should be as per http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/92/Zephyr_Class_180_180112_A_A_KGX.JPG below the buffers.

I was probably going to be doing the 15:21 Bradford to London Kings Cross service depending on what time you saw it?

They are below the buffers, however you may find some GC 180s are set out as 59101/50101.... so that'll be 59 car or 50 car and so the unit number is 180101.

GC's 180s are set out as -
59XXX (Coach B)
56XXX (Coach C)
55XXX (Coach E)
54XXX (Coach F)
50XXX (Coach D)

I looked there - it just had the coach number on there. It looked like it was XX912... but surely they don't go into the 180/9 series?

And the 15:21 would make perfect sense, I left at 3pm.

All 180 vehicle numbers have a 9 in the middle. The last two digits are the unit number (01-14)

The data panel shows them as 180/1. They were built in 2 batches 180101-108 are series A and 109-114 are series B. There are only very minor differences and when I learnt 180s the only way to tell them apart was the layout of an equipment locker.
