Hi All
I applied for TFW and have seen you need GCSE results grade C and above

I did mine about 20 years ago, and I cant remember for the life of me what I had. If I get through all the stages and they check my results, what will happen. I believe the process is the college come to the training, and then check, say I had D and Es for argument sake, will I then lose my place. Worried, as I would then have already quit current job.

I've never heard of an employer checking GCSE results, especially if you are, as it sounds, about my age (35).

Yea 35, ive never had them checked before, but I read somewhere on here, that the college come and ask for them for TFW as its now apprenticeship.

Good Afternoon Milkman.

Each examination board will check your results for you and/or provide proof of them to an employer. The bad news is that they tend to charge about £50 and this is per exam board - around the year 2000 it is quite possible that your exams were not all with the same board so you would probably have to shell out £100+ but at least you would know your results before you handed in your notice.

A cheaper alternative would be to contact your old school's present examination officer. If you are very lucky they will be helpful and the school will have kept all old records and will be able to give you your results but they are unlikely to be able to give you proof of them in the form of a certificate or similar. Even if helpful they are very likely to quote Data Protection and ask you to go into the school with photo ID. Some school examination officers are more helpful than others and this whole process also clearly depends on the record keeping of their predecessors.

Hope this helps a little.

If you can’t prove your grades they enrol you on a foundation course for maths and English I do believe it’s all due to the apprenticeship program and not trainee these days I’m sure other trainers can advise you better than me as I’ve gone on what various trainers have informed me

If you do a search on this forum you will se there has been quite a fair bit of discussion regarding gcse certification or it’s equivalent. It seems that the apprenticeship scheme requires proof of gcse passes to satisfy or begin the programme. Some companies will just put you through equivalent Key Skills if need be, some companies want to see proof you have them upon application (DB cargo for example)

Don’t know if it’s the same for all TOCs, FOCs but where I am there are a couple of weeks built in to the training schedule for people to take the key skills course that don’t have the GCSE certificates. Those that do have the certificates just have rules/traction recap time instead.

Yes this is fairly common for certain roles (especially apprenticeships) although difficult to find for those that have not done them recently. It's been discussed a bit in the past, but don't stress if you can't find them. Best best is to liaise with HR if you really cannot find any details.

It’s a requirement set by the Department for Education for apprenticeships I believe.

From recent intakes at my TOC, generally, I’ve heard they put you through a maths and English course to gain the required grades (if you don’t have them/can’t provide proof), this runs alongside your course.
