Because the advertising is often, without telling you (or even telling the owners of the sites on which it appears) doing more than just showing you pictures of products and services to enhance your lifestyle - I don't really trust any online adverts not to carry malware.
As any web publisher will tell you advertising income has gone through the floor for this very reason. By rights a lot more of the web should be behind paywalls but nobody is willing to be the first to break ranks.

What is needed is a decent standardised micropayments system. Everything being behind a fiver-a-month subscription would be really bad, but I'd happily pay something like a 10p-per-page automatic micropayment for reading, for instance, a local newspaper or a couple of articles from the Times.

I have today tried to access a link to a US site and been denied access with GDPR being quoted as the reason.
eg:
451: Unavailable due to legal reasons
We recognize you are attempting to access this website from a country belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA) including the EU which enforces the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and therefore access cannot be granted at this time. For any issues, contact [email protected] or call (978) 462-6666.
At no time was I offered any cookie options or the chance to create an account.
Computer says no! :(
Anybody else?

I’ve had that, in varying forms. US news sites often seem to have geographical restrictions, but they don’t always say whether it is due to GDPR or other reasons (rights ownership of photos/videos maybe)

A minority of US sites have decided complying with the GDPR is “too difficult” and don’t want to risk anything, so have, as you see, blocked all EU users.

Which makes me wonder what they're actually doing with the fairly limited information available to them when I visit without being logged in to an account.
