Gerald works on his day off

Train 1W91, the Cardiff - Holyhead express, on Friday 12 February, will convey three extra coaches on the back (locked out of use). On Saturday 13 February the loco and coaches will form an additional train from Holyhead at 08:08 calling only at Bangor, Llandudno Junction, Rhyl, and Chester and arriving at Crewe 10:05. It will then depart Crewe at 10:16 for Cardiff in the path of the usual 175-operated 1V77, 09:30 Manchester to Cardiff. The stock from 1V77 will wait at Crewe and be added to the 10:30 Manchester - Cardiff to provide more seats on that train. The object of the exercise is to carry fans to the Wales v Scotland 'Six Nations' rugby game at Cardiff Millennium Stadium, although this is not a charter train, and all normal tickets are valid.

The loco-hauled train Will return at 16:51 from Cardiff as 1W91 replacing the normal Manchester train but arriving Crewe about 20 minutes later that usual and then continuing to Holyhead. Monday afternoon's normal 1V31 will convey the extra coaches on the front (again locked out).

These longer trains will be able to run at 'line speed', freed from the restrictions imposed, due to braking issues, on the short loco-hauled rakes normally used. It's good to see Arriva Trains Wales making better use of their assets in this way.

Maximum line speed on the Marches is 90mph after Craven Arms, I thought these assets were WAG and not ATW's?

They cant run at line speed in their current formation, there isnt enough brake force with the amount of coaches that Gezza uses. It can only run at 80mph on the 90 sections in its normal formation or 75mph when the line speed is 80 or 85.

Yes Planner but the previous post quoted the trains will be longer so therefore enough brakeforce for linespeed?? Will they be permitted with this formation to run at 90?

why will the extra unused coaches be still part of the formation on Monday? when the Saturday working returns to Holyhead, won't they take the extra stock back off, leaving the normal 4 coach rake for its run down to Cardiff Monday morning?

If they have 7 on the back then yes, they can go at line speed. The schedule wont get altered though so it will just run early to station stops.

WAG pay ATW to run Gerald five days a week, I can only presume A few A.Ms
went to the game and a 175 is below their standard, also WAG AIR does not run on Saturdays,

Geralds stock would have to be given permission from WAG to run on Saturdays.
in fact it should run every Saturday, but not to Cardiff.

I can not see why ATW would need permission from WAG to run on a Saturday as I believe ATW own or are leasing the stock and the loco's from the money WAG is funding them with, the only extra cost will be the extra fuel and track access charges vice a 175, maybe ATW will just inform WAG that they are running on a Saturday as a good will gesture to save any future embarassments

it would make sense that the extra coaches belong at Canton and the reason i asked the question is because the OP was saying about Monday afternoon's working with the locked coaches. if the coaches belong at Canton then the train would come down from Holyhead with the extra stock and return in the afternoon with 4 coaches???? or did the OP mistakenly write the afternoon working when he meant the morning working bringing the extra stock back to Cardiff?

Sorry if I've missed something, but what about passengers using the regular service (175?) from Manchester to Cardiff (or return)? Did they have to change at Crewe both directions?

Why, whats wrong with Cardiff? Personally I think it should run up to Holyhead on a sunday afternoon, stupidly busy at those times.

He probably thinks it should solely serve Wrexham

Yes the 05:32 Holyhead-Cardiff Central tomorrow morning will have 7 coaches, three will be deposited at Canton and the 16:15 tomorrow evening back to Holyhead will have four coaches as usual.
