Children under 16 who are visiting London can buy an Oyster card and have a child discount set on it.
  • Does this have to be specifically a visitor Oyster card or will any one do?
  • Does this give access to the £1.50 off peak cap or will it be half the adult cap?

Under 11s can travel free on the tube and National Rail "Green Routes" when accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket other than a Group Travelcard.
  • Is an adult Z1-6 Travelcard discounted by Family Friends Railcard going to be accepted by barrier staff for this and not refused as being a type of Group Travelcard?

Thanks

Any Oyster card will do, it doesn't have to specifically be a "Visitor Oyster card". It provides for half the adult-rate fares and caps, i.e. it does not provide for the £1.50 off-peak cap - this is limited to holders of Zip Oyster photocards. (Note that Zip Oyster photocards are available to those who live outside London, the cost is a £10 or £15 admin fee.)

See under the Young Visitor discount heading on this page...
If you're visiting London and travelling with children aged 11 to 15 who haven't got a Zip Oyster photocard, you can still benefit from reduced rate travel for them. You can get a discount set on an Oyster or Visitor Oyster card that will allow them to pay as you go at half adult-rate for up to 14 days

That's perfectly valid, yes. A Group Day Travelcard is a specific standalone product, quite distinct from a Day Travelcard (whether it has a Railcard discount or not).
