Having just got on my train at Potters Bar, I could hear an EC HST from a long way off, but a FCC ECS 321 on the up fast was dead quiet until it was passing through (not going that fast, so almost idling through for whatever reason).
I can well believe people could be caught out, but someone crossing should be looking to see the way is clear, not judging speeds of what can be seen. Best play safe.
