I'm looking at travelling back from Milton Keynes Central to Dundee this weekend, via Glasgow. As the connection I'm hoping to make is only 28 minutes (I understand the advised connection time is 30 mins, even though it actually takes much less), and the next train from to Dundee isn't for 2 hours, the journey planners are suggesting I can go via Edinburgh.

So, if my train into Glasgow is delayed enough for me to miss the connection, is it valid to either go from Glasgow Central or Queen Street to Haymarket and then from there to Dundee on a MKC to Dundee Off Peak Return, or would I have to hang around at Glasgow Queen Street for ~2 hours?

That seems to be valid by maps LM+FD and LM+GA so it should be fine - I can't make the NR Journey Planner show it though (it ignores my 'via Glasgow' request).

It's definitely a valid route between Glasgow and Dundee, so I'd be very surprised if it weren't allowed between MK and Dundee. The maps show that it is, so you'll be fine. In fact, I'm sure you won't be the only one going that way on Sunday!

Although the 30 minute connection is not advertised, you won't have any problems with this. I can walk between the two stations in less than ten minutes easily, even at busy times, so your 28 minutes will be absolutely fine.

Yes. To get one of the journey planners to send you by this route, search for Milton Keynes C to Dundee via Falkirk High. An example offered on Sunday is:
East Coast said:
1411 Milton Keynes C - Glasgow Central 1917
2000 Glasgow Queen St - Haymarket 2046
2105 Haymarket - Dundee 2217

Thanks for the info, that's good to know.
On the way down I managed the walk across Glasgow in about 15-20 minutes at a leisurely pace, including going out of the wrong door at GLQ and stopping at Greggs for some lunch, so my main concern was making sure I had a backup plan in case the inbound Virgin service was delayed.

This afternoon I got the reservations for the journey I want to make (i.e. straight to Dundee from Glasgow Queen Street with the 28 minute connection), I had to get the woman in the ticket office to put the legs through seperately, but got there in the end.

John@Home - That was one of the suggestions I got, the other was an East Coast service from GLC to Haymarket, and then the Scotrail service from there.

It might be worthwhile having a look on Streetview for the connection across Glasgow. If you are in a rush because of a delay, familiarising yourself with the landmarks on the route may well save you valuable minutes.

With regards to connections between Queen St and Central i got off a East Kilbride service and got on a Cumbernauld service within 5 mins ! Crazy
I feel the East Cooast Fife route more interesting.
