The Cotswold Line Promotion Group has drawn up a series of station-to-station walks along the whole of the Cotswold & Malvern Line (Oxford–Worcester–Hereford) - there's a guidebook available. Colwall-Hereford is a full-day hike (20 miles), but most of the other legs are pretty short at ~10 miles or so. Some lovely walks along the Evenlode valley and over the Cotswold edge.

Obviously fewer trains, but the walk from Heysham along the prom is nice too.

Whitstable to Herne Bay

I suggested to a friend that they did Herne Bay to Birchington/Westgate-on-Sea/Margate and they enjoyed that. Takes in the ruins of Reculver.

I've done Broomfleet to Hessle as most of that was along the banks of the Humber Estuary, ending under the Humber Bridge.

Two I want to do this year are Thorne South to Althorpe along the canal and the South Humberside line, and - if timings allow - tick off Easttrington and Saltmarshe by walking between the two.

Last summer I did a walk from Windermere utilising part of the Dalesway to Staveley, had a couple of enjoyable hours in Hawkshead Brewery then caught the train back to Windermere.
Like a previous poster, I usually prefer train out and walk back, but not in this instance as I felt I had earned my beer as the walk was just shy of 10 miles I seem to remember.

Something a bit different, one can take the train to North Queensferry and walk along the Forth Road Bridge to South Queensferry. After a coffee break I took the train back to North Queensferry and walked along the Fife Coastal Path to Inverkeithing. Another pleasant coastal work, nothing difficult. On reaching Inverkeithing station it had started pouring with rain so I took a journey around the Fife Circle (had never used this line before) before going home.

Kemsley to Sittingbourne is a nice walk when you go via the Milton Creek Country Park, then along a path alongside the water.

Also on Saturday I did Rochester towards Snodland, following a path which ran underneath the Medway viaducts (had to stop to grab a photo of a train going across), then along a grassy path which ran alongside the River Medway
towards Wouldham. Then after crossing the river, going via Holborough Marshes country park to reach Snodland station.

Hoping on Sunday to walk towards Maidstone from Wateringbury along the Medway.

The Forth & Clyde and the Union canals link Bowling to Glasgow then on to Edinburgh. Towpaths along the full length. There are lots of stations next to or relatively close to the canals. Lots of permutations, including a walk thro the Falkirk Canal Tunnel (Falkirk & Polmont stations)

Actually, there are many canals that follow railways. They served the same needs as the later railways. So:-

Worcester - Droitwich- Birmingham
Warwick - Birmingham
Coventry - nuneaton - Tamworth
Henley in Arden - Stratford
Leeds - Skipton - Gargrave then Colne- Preston.
Halifax- Rochdale

And on preserved railways
Market bosworth -Shackerstone
Llangollen - Chain Bridge.

This doesnt strictly fit the criterea unless you were determined enough but a really cracking walk using Glasgow QS as a starting point is to get a train to Corrour then walk through to Dalwhinnie via Ben Alder, Bheinn Bheoil and the Culra then take a train back to Glasgow via Perth. A couple of points to make though. This is a distance of roughly 37 miles through some really tough, mountainous terrain so wouldn't really be achievable in a day unless you were a superfit fell runner! Also, this is a trip strongly recommended for the summer months as the weather can be deadly up there in winter.
I did the opposite route a few years ago and camped 2 nights on route, taking my time. It is a beautifully remote area and you are lucky if you meet anyone else walking through.
Thoroughly recommended if you want to dissappear for a short while!

I can recommend the Medway Valley walk from Beltring towards Maidstone. First section from the station is along a closed lane, then crossing a dual carriageway before reaching the river. Nice gentle walk along the riverside path, surface quality was more dried mud (which was a bit uneven), some mud (mainly in areas the sun hadn't quite reached) before tarmac a mile from East Farleigh -> Maidstone.

12 miles, although I did detour a few times to visit the stations along the way.

There is a railway leaflet published for the Cambrian coast line with walks between virtually every station on that line, mainly coastal but some inland, apart from the first section from Machynlleth. Obviously the walk across Barmouth viaduct to Fairbourne is a highlight.

Welshpool to Newtown is an easy 14 miles on the canal towpath which parallels the railway mainly on the other side of the river.

Can also recommend Seaford to Eastbourne. Whitstable to Birchington ( a bit further than the already mentioned Whitstable to Herne Bay) is another good coastal one. Inland Uckfield to East Grinstead (long), Otford to Eynsford, Tadworth to Reigate and Caterham to Redhill.

Settle to Gargrave. Over Attermire and Stockdale to Malham (Height gain to consider) then Pennine way down the Aire valley to Gargrave. Starting at Giggleswick adds a mile.

Although not many km it's a great hike up to the top and down the other side. You can always extend the walk north and finish at Malvern Link or divert south to British Camp from Colwall and walk the full length of the hills via the ridge path.

There was a sign saying that part of the footpath was going to be closed, but it was fine today. I've had a look for details about this, and the only mention I can see is this short footpath diversion between Shawford and Compton

I suspect the sign might be old

That footpath diversion linked isn't anywhere near Shawford as I did it on Saturday as part of a loop when waiting for my car to get MOTed (goes around the edge of a large compound built near a farm for M3 engineering works)

What's the river path condition like between Shawford & Eastleigh, I noticed on Saturday north of Shawford it was quite muddy in places. But it's on my list for a Sunday walk.

definitely! We are saving that (and other lengths of the same sea-wall) for bike rides with the wind behind us.
However a walk from Tal-Y Cafn or Dolgarrog (if you can get across the river) in the Conwy valley over to somewhere like Llanfairfechan is a good day trip - if the timetable allows it these days.

Yes that looks like the one. Google Maps doesn't seem to offer the path by the Itchen near there. I'm not sure if its because if that, or some other issue.
