Seems the GC have had there track access extended till 2038. I believe this means a new order we be looked at to replace the 180s.

Grand Central’s request to extend its track access rights from London to Bradford and Sunderland has been approved, RAIL understands.

The open access operator applied to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) in the autumn of 2024 to extend the rights on its current routes from December 2027 until the end of 2038.

Grand Central had said in its application it was proposing to procure a new build fleet of (at least bi-mode trains” to replace the Class 180 and ‘221’ DMUs that currently run under the wires on the East Coast Main Line (ECML).

Good news for Grand Central, bet it's a relief for everyone involved! We just might finally see the back of the 180s as well!

It's completely understandable that the business didn't want to commit to new trains until this had been agreed.

The RAIL article is not official confirmation, however hopefully the official announcement of track access and new trains will happen next week.

Personally I'll be sorry to see them go. I think they are fantastic machines but very "misunderstood".

Well I'll be interested to see how their Bradford service performs once LNER ramps up service to Foster Square, we'll get to see how many people in Bradford will stick with GC and how much their other stops in West Yorkshire support the service financially.

Good riddance to them!

And they have one of the best first class interiors on the British railway network!

For OA operators the award of new or extended rights is a pre-requisite for the ROSCOs. You won’t get them to sign a contract if you don’t have that Track Access decision in writing from the ORR.

I agree to a point. They're fantastic if you can get them to start in the first place and to not catch fire!!
The first time I rode one I'd forgotten it was a high speed unit by the time we'd pootled from Bradford to Doncaster...then it left Donny and stuck me in the seat like a fighter jet...mega!!!

Yep! :)

If you get a good one, they match a Voyager up to 50ish mph, and where a Voyager tails off a 180 can keep the same acceleration rate all the way up to 125mph.

I'd like to think if they had been a larger fleet then many of the issues would have been resolved over the years.

I am guessing this news about following application from Grand Central which the report claims is approved
GC’s current track access agreement expires on PCD 2027 and with an ageing diesel fleet GC is making this application in order to extend its current access rights for 11 years, underpinning the required investment in a replacement fleet and allowing GC to continue to provide benefits to the communities currently served. It is proposed that the agreement will commence at 01:59 hours on the PCD 2027 and end at 01:59 hours on the PCD 2038.
GC is proposing to procure a new build fleet of at least Bi-Mode trains (GC is considering the option to include an element of battery operation) which will provide an improved customer offering, remove the requirement for GC to operate diesel trains on the ECML and in to London King’s Cross and improve rolling stock reliability and performance across GC services.
GC is seeking no additional access rights over and above the firm and contingent rights contained within its existing access agreement for which services are currently operating. We therefore believe consideration of this application has no impact on and is not impacted by the ORR track access process set out in its letter of 24th April, given it seeks no additional rights and is outside the periods defined in the ORR process. For the avoidance of doubt this will mean the continuation of:
North East
Monday – Saturday – 6 return services between Sunderland and London King’s Cross
Sunday: 5 return services between Sunderland and London King’s Cross
West Riding
Monday – Sunday: 4 return services between Bradford and London King’s Cross.
is related to the following statement in the following letter dated 19 March 2025 from Network Rail to the Office of Rail and Road and that there will be news in the next week about a number of applications relating to the East Coast Mainline
28. We do not want to take longer than is needed to provide our representations on any application and we look for opportunities to expedite our assessment of any applications. The following packages of representations are expected to be with you in the next few weeks:
Week commencing 24th March
· Final representations on an initial tranche of ten individual applications including eight relating to the East Coast Mainline.
· One additional final representation on a national passenger application
