I can confirm that Urgent or Emergency buttons do fire up the radio and make the call - I've only tested Urgent from a rear cab though :)

Another point of interest is that it seems terminals can move around the country - on one occasion I wanted to call a depot and the only options available were "390 fleet support" and "220/221 fleet support" ! I elected not to call either, as I don't think they know too much about Electrostars :)

Presumably the thing has obtained a config over the network somehow, and got something unsuitable? would be a strange idea if they were hardcoded into an actual box, but stranger things happen in anything IT related all the time...

I've heard that NR own all the handsets and they get sent off to be repaired so it wouldn't surprise me.
Getting connected to the wrong signaller is quite common too - the best one being a driver in Essex being connected to Three Bridges ROC. Not sure how that happens but I would have loved to listen to that conversation while they realise what is going on!

As someone who's worked managing large networks ( part of that is remote config deployment ) I don't think I've got time to list how many ways that can end up happening :D usually it'd be human/procedural error, but it could be an actual bug - no doubt there'll be effort fixing it when it ends up being a less amusing problem. Calling the wrong ROC from a London terminus might cause some more confusion if it's not made clear which one it is ...

Thanks for posting that link. As a driver it was interesting to see how it works at the signaller end and long confirmed a theory I've had about how 'waiting at signal' is sometimes dealt with :)

I can confirm as a signaller “at signal” is dealt with “remove” option hence no reply to you guys...especially if the signal your standing at is at the end of a straight platform with a train sat in it ! lol

Another use I saw being practiced, one day at the depot, was for Control Room staff eg Customer Information Controller to use the PA to pass things like delay information to passengers on a DOO service instead of via the Driver, therefore freeing up the Driver to carry out their necessary functions.
More like “Stranded Train Protocol” type of affair rather than just being sat at a red signal for more than 5 minutes.

Yes, that’s right. Although as a general rule no one but the controlling signaller will use the base to train facilities of GSMR.

RCM will answer a REC if there is no answer from the signaller though.

Prime example of a unit not being set up correctly when replaced! When I did some GSM-R stuff, we had to install two phonebooks onto the unit as part of the commissioning of the GSM-R unit, one would be the Network Rail area phonebook, and one would be the TOC phonebook. When defective units are removed from a unit they are sent back to a central NR location for repair.
