Hi, was sat on a GWR IET (is that what they're called?) & as it accelerated it had a pretty surprising lateral vibration going on, I'd guess 10Hz or that order of magnitude at least. if it'd been me in a car I'd have assumed flat tire or something & stopped. It disappeared with a minor deacceleration so presumably some speed-related resonance. Should I be concerned/report it?

IET's ride poorly generally; was this particularly unusual compared to other journeys you've made on this type of train?

I'm not sure I've been on one travelling at speed before tbh. That's interesting that ride is know to be poor, as an ex-engineer I'l have thought that was a solved problem these days.

Ride quality is often poor on modern trains these days. There was a thread regarding IETs posted a couple of years ago:

Interesting thread that onee thanks. The one I was on wasn't as bad as that!
There's also a more recent discussion of the problems with IETs, including some posts referencing poor riding, in this thread:

IET yes. I would have thought that the vibration would be due to the underfloor diesel engines being operational (assuming that your journey was in diesel mode).

It’s always worth reporting it.

There are a number of wheelset/suspension related issues with these sets.

No, depressingly the rough ride on these things seems to be the new normal. I’ve got a few videos I’ve taken that I would upload but they’re too big for this site unfortunately, showing similar rough riding and all the banging of the underfloor mounted equipment. At least the Mk3s never rode this badly, yet to some you’d think they were invented by the devil.

IET ride is worse - much worse - than a Mark 4, never mind a Mark 3.

That's exactly the same location as I experienced the same thing on Thursday evening (I posted about it in the other IET thread). There must be some combination of speed and track geometry there which makes it so bad in that area

The ones on the ECML are just the same. When I mentioned in a tweet the response was along the lines of “it’s the rails”.

Travelling south of Darlington the approach to Northallerton is awful. Coffee won’t stay in the cup sometimes

It's certainly a bit of track that the trains don't like. It's fair to say that mk4s and HSTs handled it with a bit more grace, but the LNER maintenance team also did loads of work on ride quality, so it might just be that the form of the maintenance contract with Hitachi is preventing them from getting to the same ride quality.
