Hi

I'm looking for a bit of information on the handback process... I've been given a brief bit of information but I now need to write an essay on it with minimal info and a google search is just returning some really random results. Just wondered if any of the extremely knowledgable people of this forum could give a bit more information on what this is?

Thanks a lot!

Not a HBE myself but have a few guys in my team who hold the ticket. It’s a 3 day course for the initial ticket then after the initial course you go through a period of mentoring working under a qualified HBE which must be recorded in a logbook, then you are assessed to prove you are competent. Once competent you do annual assessments. There’s 4 levels of competence with Level 1 being the basic. This makes you competent to hand back up to 30mph. Each level takes you up in linespeed to eventually level 4 which is 125mph.

Example of a course here: https://www.amtrain.co.uk/track-handback-engineer/

Hope that helps!

That is of course it's assuming this is related to infrastructure, the terms are also used for rolling stock assets.
I’m only familiar with the track engineering handback process, if the OP is looking for the rolling stock process then he should totally disregard my irrelevant post

Hi, thanks for your replies.

It is regarding the engineering process. But what are the basic processes? If you had to explain it to a dummy...

I'm not looking for a job, just need to show a bit of an understanding...

Sorry for late reply.
Basically a HBE arrives on site before work starts, undertakes a survey using a track gauge to record the existing condition of the track. They record things like cant, twist, top etc. A set of forms is completed, numbered A to G. Once the engineering work is completed on the shift the HBE undertakes a second survey to ensure the track is being handed back within certain tolerances of the original survey taken at the start. If everything is ok, forms A to G are finalised and line is handed back into traffic at linespeed.
If any problems are identified by the HBE, ie: a twist fault resulting from the work undertaken, corrective work would be done to put it right, eg: lifting and packing. Worst case scenario if it can’t be put right there and then, an ESR would be put on the local maintenance depot until such time the fault can be corrected. Costs associated with any delay minutes incurred during that time will be sent directly to the contractor responsible...!

Hope that helps.
