BBC reports that Ministers mull rail link - apparently in the Times this am:

"A 180mph (288km/h) train service between the two locations has been proposed, The Times reported.

And the multibillion-pound idea is to be studied by ministers, the Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed.

But Heathrow's operator, BAA, said it "provided no extra runway capacity".

The idea also faced "seemingly insurmountable technical, operational, political financial challenges, and would take many years to deliver", the company added.

The scheme, which would create a so-called "virtual hub" running from west London to West Sussex, was welcomed by Gatwick Airport, however."

No details of how they propose to run these trains in 15-20 minutes without an entirely new line ... which would require tunnel for most of the way. BBC news channel threw no light on the matter, either.

Nice idea, though.

Later report says it would run along the M25 route, to avoid disruption (!).

Might as well carry on to Ashford International (for Manston), while they're at it....

There are several reasons why this will never happen.
1) Extremely high cost for what benefit? Both LHR and LGW are operating at or near full runway capacity. So this is not going to add any much needed capacity.
2) There is a lack of synergy between LHR and LGW, especially since BAA was forced to sell LGW. LHR heavily business/long haul, LGW leisure. BAA are not going to stump up any cash.
3) Building a railway around the M25 would be strategically wrong for the existing railway network, not to mention Crossrail and Thameslink. It would be far more beneficial to spend the money on a better link between HS1 and 2 when the time comes.
