Get your wellies out !!
Get your wellies out !!
Due to a speed restriction because of severe weather between Preston and Glasgow Central fewer trains are able to run on all Glasgow and Edinburgh lines.
Impact
Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 02:00 29/10.
Customer Advice
Avanti West Coast will be implementing an amended timetable North of Preston on Wednesday 27 October and Thursday 28 October.
Heavy rainfall is forecast over this period with 100-130mm (5.11 inches) expected in Cumbria and South Lankarshire on higher ground. As a result, Network Rail have imposed a series of speed restrictions for safety at several locations. With the restrictions in place delays of up to 90 minutes can be expected on services to and from Scotland on the West Coast Main Line in addition to the normal travel time.
CIS at Birmingham New St stating that a change is required off the 14.15 Avanti departure to Preston for a "shuttle service to Scotland".
Not much choice for Penrith to Preston though! Just found out my 1004 is cancelled tomorrow. ticket acceptance with TPE but no doubt it will be rammed, it is at the best of times.Presumably they are trying to avoid delays caused by this causing the service south of Preston to collapse? A bit like the way LNR splits at Northampton when things go wrong?
Less needed for TPE because their service is only really important north of Preston, there are plenty of other Manchester-Preston services.
I'm guessing so they don't become stranded. Why are TPE showing pretty much a normal service on the WCML tomorrow, while Avanti are cancelling many trains?
I've been following developments today, first thing I thought about TPE ticket acceptance was 'Well, good luck anyone boarding that service'Not much choice for Penrith to Preston though! LNER haven’t had compulsory reservations since July so TPE are wrong. LNER services still have the compulsory reservation flag in the system, but so do XC and Lumo.If what TPE Twitter are saying is correct, that LNER are enforcing compulsory reservations while every other TOC takes full and standing loads, they need a punch in their proverbials. Or if it's not true, TPE need to take the Tweet down.
It seems ironic that a fully commercial TOC is helping out, and a Government owned one much less so!
There is very likely to still be an Avanti service, just not many and not running beyond Preston. Not much choice for Penrith to Preston though! Just found out my 1004 is cancelled tomorrow. ticket acceptance with TPE but no doubt it will be rammed, it is at the best of times.

E.g. An 0836 Glasgow Central to Preston is currently showing, leaving Penrith at 1116.
Worth noting that Avanti have issued do not travel advice for tomorrow which includes Penrith.
The Blackpool line sometimes floods at Poulton-le-Fylde and AWC wouldn't want a unit stranded there that they can use on shuttles from Preston to London.Considering the bad weather is further north why did Avanti West Coast decide to curtail all their Blackpool services at Preston yesterday? The reason given was forecast severe weather but Blackpool wasn't due to get any and other services were running to/from Blackpool with no problem.
I'm guessing Avanti turned around the Blackpool bound trains at Preston to enable them to have a train available for the xx17 Preston to London via Birmingham services. The Blackpool line sometimes floods at Poulton-le-Fylde and AWC wouldn't want a unit stranded there that they can use on shuttles from Preston to London.
Not been that wet in Ribblesdale today. How it is further north I dunno. The Leeds to Carlisle services seem to be running as advertised.
Avanti stating on twitter that there's a landslip at Beattock. Looks like there could be disruption for a while. Not good news as I'm meant to be on the 06:52 from Edinburgh tomorrow morning!nonla
Well that's certainly good news. I'll be keeping an eye on things for sure.No landslip, Slight flooding with caution on lines, but lines still open
... Still a lot of late season holidaymakers around it seems. ...
Is it just me or did anyone else think "half term, hmm..."? Sorry if that's unwarranted, I expect it's just a coincidence.
