Help identify LNER beakers on Ebay?

I have come across this interesting item on Ebay and wonder what it is for? Perhaps some kind of 'weights and measures' inspection, or something?

Any ideas? It is not my sale, by the way, I'm just curious.

I would think it was some form of sampling of liquids for transport back to a lab where they could be analysed. As to whether this was water as used in engine boilers or oil as used in engines for lubrication, I am unable to say! But quite intriguing!

And a date of between 1923 and 1948 rather than 1800s
