This has been discussed five years ago, but obviously out of date and the thread is now closed.

Just wondering what the highest PVR is in the UK? London routes must be a winner, but you've also got the 192 in Manchester, the 38 in Glasgow and the 50 in Birmingham.

Highest PVR routes in London is as follows:

38 = 59 PVR
29 = 44 PVR
149 = 38 PVR
18 = 36 PVR
25 = 32 PVR (was more but has since been withdrawn between Oxford Circus and City Thameslink)
521 = 31 PVR
390 = 30 PVR

The 192 (Manchester) and 50 (Birmingham) most come close to 50. The 38 in Glasgow must be well in the thirties.

I believe the 700 with its 3-way split has a combined PVR of 47.

The WM 50 sounds about right (If you include Diamond, NX and the Johnsons 150)
The WM 11A/C must come up to about 40-50 vehicles (including the 2 independent operators on the route

When I used to drive the 11, the daytime PVR was 22 each side, so 11A & C was 44. Had a few extras that came on during school times, but they didn’t run the complete circle.

The 4/H/M corridor must see quite a high PVR to sustain the every 6 minute frequency between Walsall and Blackheath. Also, the 31/32 in Walsall must have a high PVR as they combine to provide an every 3 minute frequency between Walsall and Bloxwich.

Birmingham's 50 route is certainly not 50 buses, the batch new for it in 2018 are the 22 numbered 6893-6914 though only 95-11 are actually route branded, plus there’s 4 slightly newer spares so more like 25 buses I’d say. Rotala owned Diamond also operate a competing service but that would have less than 10 buses on it usually, and there’s no joint partnership in place.

Manchesters 192 is close or more than 50, its getting a new batch of Enviro 400s this year but I can’t find the numbers of how many.

There are several other branded buses that appear on the 50 as well mind. I'll have to tweet NXWM and see if they would provide that information.

I wonder what pvr is Britain's highest ever? A strong contender would be London route no. 12 which had an allocation of 113 buses on Monday to Friday between 1952 and 1954.

The 192 is made up of 3 different services:
Piccadilly to Hazel Grove every 10 minutes - approx a 2 hours & 30 minutes round trip so about 15 buses
Piccadilly to Stepping Hill every 10 minutes - approx a 2 hour round trip so about 12 buses
Piccadilly to Stockport College every 10 minutes at peak hours - approx a 1 hour & 55 minutes round trip so about 11 buses
Therefore a PVR of about 37
The 52 E400MMCs due for Stockport are for the 197 as well as 192 as I don't think Stagecoach would have 15 spare vehicles for single route :)

Ok no longer 1 route , but London’s 253 was one of the busiest London Routes in the 70’s and 80’s. Now cut into 2 overlapping routes 253 and 254, what is the combined PVR. It always had a complicated service in daytime.

Combined PVR of the 253/254 is 54 (27 each).

Highest PVR figure during the decades you mentioned was 59 in the early 70s: this gradually decreased until opo of the 253 in 1987 saw an increase from 48 to 58 overnight, though it was soon reduced again after the section between Mornington Crescent and Warren Street was withdrawn.

Looking at Ian Armstrong site, in the mid 60s London Bus route 25 had a PVR of 81[37 from Bow, & 44 from West Ham garages], even 4 years ago the PVR for the 25 was 59, it's now 32

253 was a nightmare to work as a conductor, was bad enough with RM’s but when we got RML’s in AG you could hardly get upstairs to the front between stops S you were running with a 3 bell load , but passengers alighting every stop. If yuydidnt get back to platform before stops lowers deck was rammed with standing

Even better, between 1950 and 1957 one garage alone (Forest Gate) provided 81 buses for the 25 each Monday to Friday, with a scattering of other buses from Clay Hall: I think this may be the greatest ever PVR by one garage on one route. At weekends, a mere 57 buses sufficed!

The only ones I could think get close would be the SPS contracts down at Hinkley Point C, according to Wiki they will require 160 vehicles at the peak. Obviously there'll be a number of different routes but I would be willing to bet there'll be one major route that may take 50 or so.

I'm unsure what the PVRs are, but I understand they will be even higher than normal at the moment as First Kernow have sent a number of currently surplus vehicles and drivers there to assist with social distancing on what are normally busy services.
