I caught a glimpse of a class 60 a few months ago on its way to Toton, counted myself lucky!

Visiting Toton graveyard still makes me sad. Did they ever sell anymore bar the 10 to Colas?

There were to be a batch of class 38's and 48's I forgot how many of each and what purposes etc, and what design they'd take, but the class 60 was chosen instead for heavy freight haulage after Foster Yeoman introduced the Class 59's to the UK. Potted history.

"The locomotive is a failure"

... or pessimism. It may not be as flexible as the 66, but it has an edge on certain types of haul. I was reflecting on the warning panel which appeared at various points on the video; the aviation industry already had better displays where in addition to the fault indications there were messages about how to fix them and in which order (I don't know what the 59s had then).

Class 60s were built to haul the heaviest of heavy trains.
They are good at it - but that is not what we need any more.

There is still a requirement for some but how many is the question.

Construction traffic, ie heavy stone trains, is booming. Oil Trains now load to 3000 tons. Semi finished and finished steel provide good sized trains.

However steel traffic on the railway is now in decline.

When the last few get cut up. Heavy haul businesses will immediately demand heavy haul trains. Thats the way the UK works.

Reported on the interweb that the sale of twenty Class 60s by DB (assumed to be the twenty Class 60s offered for sale last August) is being proceeded with and Wabtec is the purchaser. BR60062 won't be able to contain himself! ;)

...and who work very closely with GBRf 'revitalising' long-term stored Brush-built heavy-haul freight locos from the late-80s/early-90s...

Would be surprised if Wabtec are investing in this many locos (including their overhaul) if they don't have at least some 'buyers' (or hirers) lined up. Although I guess they won't be paying a huge amount for them (comparatively) and if there's not demand for 20 currently they can leave some of them stored until such time as they're needed/wanted.

Suspect DB were offering 20 or nothing - and likewise a decent 'bulk buy' price.

Not to mention re-engineering 1960s built BR/EE traction.

GBRf's Engineering Director has long experience of working with Brush - he was Project Manager for the FGW power car re-engineering programme.

I wonder if they are heading overseas. Either that or perhaps they will be used on the HS2 project.

Hopefully not!

Assuming all this happens, of the 20 Wabtec buy I'm assuming some will be needed as spares donors for the others, so they may get, say, 16 working initially.

GBRf have long been rumoured to be after 6-10 Class 60s and I still suspect they're lined up as a customer given that and their close relations with Wabtec/Brush.

So (and this is educated speculation) there may be 6-10 further 60s available - which could be further ones for GBRf if things go the way they expect/hope or other FOC's gaining heavy haul work (HS2 being the main candidate, but also potentially other commodities).

They could go abroad and be sold - although I would be a little surprised if that was a corner-stone of Wabtec's strategy, not least due to the uncertainty re European trading terms by the time these are likely to be ready.

Also, GBRf in particular have Euro-ready 66s not doing a great deal, but really could do with more heavy haul locos, so maybe it's the 66s that go abroad to other Hector Rail subsidiaries rather than 60s...?

I also have a feeling some will just be stripped for spares

Couldn't find any links suggesting this has happened yet!

The info originally quoted on this thread was (I believe) from the WNXX website, but you'll need to be a subscriber to see it. WNXX tends to be well informed.

Note WNXX says "it has been indicated that..." and they also state they're making an assumption that it's the same 20 offered for sale last August.

So not quite up to the stage of press release/stories on Wabtec and/or DB's web pages yet.

Hmm.
I think you may have selected the wrong link.
It took me to a website selling handbags!!!!

Ha ha, yes - had a good browse but none my colour.
