Are the meagre Transpennine services from Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly via Huddersfield all 2x3 coach 185s? Formations are not showing on RTT (as I'd pretty much expect).

Reports suggest TPE are having difficulty producing route trained crews for the advertised 2 hourly service. However, journey times by substitute coach are 5-10 minutes quicker than the trains diverted via Wakefield and Huddersfield.

I guess live there's not much to see. Even a time-lapse wouldn't show very much visible progress.

I didn't have time to take more pictures today but if the weather is kind I'll see what I can do as the week progresses. Here's the work on the new Dore chord/loop about 10.15.

There were a few difficulties reported on TPE diverted services this morning. There still seems to be a shortage of diversionary route signed drivers. As bus replacements may be quicker that may not be such a great disadvantage!

Is that one of the ones I saw on Abbeydale Road this lunchtime with “I’m a pretend train, choo, choo” on its indicator?

Maybe, however there's
1 Bus per 2 hours direct Sheffield - Manchester (TPE busses)
1 Bus per hour direct Sheffield - Stockport (EMR busses)
1 Bus per hour Sheffield - New Mills (Northern)

I'd imagine the TPE bus would stay to motorways and go around near Huddersfield, so I'd imagine you probably saw either the 12:21 EMR bus or the 12:15 Northern bus, not the 12:10 TPE bus (what a good idea, having all 3 busses in the same 11 minutes, they could've at least put the EMR one at the other half hour to the TPE)

Yes, the Northern choo, choo for New Mills Central! It goes to New Mills New Town, probably because it's easier to wait there and that offers an alternative route into Piccadilly.

The timings of these bus replacements underline why this Hope Valley scheme is so much needed. Double the fast normal train timings. More than double if having to change at Stockport or New Mills.

Just seen one on Abbeydale Raid inbound to Sheffield saying it was EMR rail replacement, no frivolous choo choo stuff!

FWIW, My diverted service from Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly via Huddersfield today (9B20, 1041 from Sheffield) was very civilised. A 2x3 coach 185, I had a whole 1st class section to myself, and standard class looked pretty empty too. When waiting to leave Sheffield, it was mildly amusing when the announcer claimed that revenue protection would be performing a full ticket check before the train departed - about three minutes before we left! I had visions of some sort of ninja flying down the train scanning a whole row of tickets in a single mid-air pass.

It looked as if the return service from Manchester would be a bit busier, but still far from full. Of course it does take about 40 minutes longer than usual but to me that's a bonus. :E

It seems to be going well and flagged as green for commissioning on Monday morning, 25th, with arrival of TPEs 6.14 at Dore.

Final touches going into station today, tarmac being passed across. Still a lot of little details, but 5 full days and nights to get it done.

20240319_160415.jpg

The redoubled tracks south of the station today. The work on the loop/chord is going on out of sight in this view, where 2 orange figures can be seen.

The critical spot below Poynton Wood on Sunday afternoon. The old junction has now been removed but the loop/chord still needs completing at this point.

Since it was stated that a retaining wall would be necessary alongside the Dore Loop. has that now become just some concrete pumped into the ground?

Simply put, it looks like it. It needs an engineer to explain exactly how deep it goes and how it waa formed. It isn't how it was explained it woukd be at the 2016 public inquiry. The Dore loop/chord appears to have been the biggest challenge encountered on the scheme.

Hope Valley visit today, to see progress. Also visited Earles Sidings to see how we at York ROC will fringe to Earles on the new Sheffield Outer Workstation, live from 25th March. Any interior signal box pictures, taken with permission of the LOM and Duty Signaller.

Glad to see a shiny new diagram has been provided at Earles Sidings rather than the usual method of gaffer taping a sheet
of A4 paper over the old one!

Am I interperting the diagram correctly that the change over of control to York happens part way down the loop?
Is that normal for one box/panel to control the entrance to a loop and a different one control the exit?

No, it just shows our first signal which is the entrance into to loop. Just so that Earles can see what's going on. The loop is fully York ROC Sheffield Outer.

Used to be very common, still in use at Langham Jn. to Oakham on Syston to Peterborogh.

An excellent photographic summary of progress - I'm envious of the access obtained to so many locations. Completion of track round the Dore curve has been bogged down for some time!

Below is the view from the compound in the triangle, and the new signal at Bamford for the new loop, which has flashing aspects in rear of it for a faster entry into the loop, rather than approach control.

First picture shows remains of the pond/swamp that was bedevilling construction round the curve. It's still very wet down there.

Indeed - and great to see it all coming together. But thanks are due to you as well, for your series of photographic updates over the project.

Separately, does anyone know if they’re going to take advantage of the possession to cut back any of the vegetation that seems to be encroaching along the key cuttings? Looks like it could be really bad for leaf fall, come the autumn.
