How far away can you hear a train (in good conditions)?

I work about 900m south of Clifton Down station and can often hear the horns of trains even though they are in a cutting and the intervening topography is very built-up with tall houses and a slight hill in the way.

On the footbridge south of Horfield Jn you can here certain trains starting to ascend Filton bank from a good couple of miles away, especially older diesels (37s on test trains etc.). The distant throbbing getting louder and louder is a joyful thing.
