How many platforms does York actually need ?

With the thread in the Speculative Ideas forum about how could we build new platforms at York and with NR recommending a new island platform, this has got me wondering how may through platforms does York actually need ?

Well that depends, if we had a blank slate, not that many.

But unfortunately we can't have a blank slate

Another south-facing bay or two would probably be useful. York was over-rationalised prior to electrification and that was only with 2.5tph terminating from the south.
