Evening all :)

I'm sure this is a question that has been asked many times, but if any of you more knowledgeable than I might know the answer I'd be very grateful for the help!

I'm trying to find out how one goes about becoming footplate crew for main line steam operators?

Tall order I know, but I am actually a main line TOC driver already, and sign a considerable number of traction types. I'm also currently a steam footplateman in the heritage sector.

Ideas on a postcard?
:)

Your experience is a good starting point.
Get involved with a loco owning group if they operate with WCRC.
Show you're prepared to get stuck in with cleaning/ maintenance/ support crew and eventually you may get asked to get involved with firing the loco. It all takes time, building up experience and the responsible officers of the day getting used to you and trusting you.

LSL and DB Cargo operated steam workings use paid staff on both sides of the cab and as Traction Inspector. Volunteers are support crew only (watering, shovelling coal forwards, turn round lubrication etc.)
