How to plan a “bashing” journey as a newbie?

Always on a train
hi all,
I have a few ideas of train trips around the UK for after my exams finish. The thing is, there are a few trains on my “bucket list”:
  • Intercity 125/225
  • mk4 loco-hauled services
  • 158s/159s.
My question for those more experienced than me is, how do I plan for the best chance of the above stock AND not ruin my finances with flexible tickets? I know, for example, that LNER 225s go to Leeds, and I check RTT to keep an eye out, but is there a better way of doing things? Wouldn’t be a dealbreaker as i like all trains, but how do I mitigate/avoid disappointment if I don’t catch the above stock on Advances where I can’t wait for the next train?
thanks!

Compared to the 225/Mk4 sets the 159s should be easy enough to experience with a half-hourly service from London towards Salisbury.

HSTs are more limited to a few services in Devon/Cornwall and in Scotland.

There's a list of 225 services here

Class 91 diagrams

You'll notice that for quite a lot of the day on weekdays, two of the Leeds-King's Cross services are two consecutive trains (starting with the 0715 and 0741 ex-Leeds), so even if you had to use Advances, you could book (for example) King's Cross to Leeds on the first diagram, and the return on the second one.

The planned 225 diagrams pretty reliably turn up as planned.

My advice once you've decided what services or routes you're particularly keen on, is to follow the itinerary you fancy on a different day or multiple different days on Real Time Trains. For most TOCs it will tell you exactly what unit or set turns up and gives you a feel for whether your connections are realistic and you're not going to be bowled by a 170 or 150 when you want a 158.

With an idea of your planned services in hand and ready to book, I recommend using Trainsplit or the forum site because of its supremely tailorable tinkerable advanced itinerary settings. You can do things like specify multiple stations to stop or change at (or not stop or not change at) to force a route, and add extra minutes, if you need to play around with your connection to target an exact train to end up on. And then of course it will give you multiple options and splits to give you best value.

I too prefer 158s to Azumas and Pendos, so for example on a trip from Cambridge to Manchester I have coming up, when I'm in no rush on my travel day, I am have engineered in a Leeds to Carlisle 158 leg (Settle Carlisle line, on my own bucket list) and then close to the full length of a Liverpool to Norwich EMR 158 on the return. The service I have chosen reliably turns up 158s not 170s though you can never be sure.

That's my final piece of advice, find imaginative or circuitous ways to get to places you already need to go and have to pay for anyway, and you can often do so much cheaper than the direct intercity operator (Waterloo - Salisbury - Cardiff on 159/158 is much more fun than Paddington to Cardiff direct on an IET!)

Leeds - Wakefield is covered by the West Yorkshire DaySaver ticket which would give flexibility once you got that far - book advances to / from Wakefield and you can then shuttle back and forth between there and Leeds as much as you want / have time for - though on weekdays the ticket is only valid after 09.30 and not between 16.01 and 18.29.
Likewise, there are Day Ranger tickets for both Cornwall and Devon covering the GW HST operating area.
Cheshire Day Ranger will cover 67s between Manchester and Crewe - I don't think there are any other day rangers covering any other bits of the Marches line.
For 158s / 159s suggest advances to / from Bath via Salisbury (thus guaranteeing 159s between London and Salisbury) then get yourself the Bristol area freedom travelpass (comes in various different zones - https://travelwest.info/tickets-travelcards/freedom-travelpass-bus-rail-passes/#SnippetTab ) Unfortunately it's a bit of a lottery in the Bristol area as to what unit turns show up as 158s and what are 165 / 166s - though RTT will help you on the day.

You can guarantee 158s on all Cambrian line services west of Shrewsbury, as they're the only passenger stock fitted with the necessary signalling equipment to use that line. Most of those services continue to/from Birmingham International, though there's a slight possibility of a set swap at Shrewsbury if there's a shortage of units on the day.

The Cheshire Day Ranger will also cover 158s on the EMR Liverpool-Norwich service as far as Stockport (as well as TfW 67/Mk4s on Manchester-Crewe).
It also does Crewe-Runcorn-Liverpool and Crewe-Chester-Liverpool for circular journeys avoiding double-backs.
It covers both routes Liverpool-Manchester.

For 158s the EMR stock rostered shows on Real Time Trains the night before and 158s are pretty regular on the Norwich, Peterborough - Nottingham - Sheffield - Manchester - Liverpool turns (but 170s are also used now for some trains on that route so this is worth checking)

It doesn't always work but what I do is look at what happened say yesterday (but perhaps not a Sunday but you get the idea) on RTT to see what might happen on the exact same day a week later in terms of what rolling stock is allocated. Doesn't always work but it gives you an idea for planning

For Inter City 125s if funds permit a trip to Scotland would afford a better travelling experience because the Great Western HST sets have had their interiors made so unpleasant IMHO (too cramped, almost all uni directional airline seating which destroys the benefits of the widows and the group of 4 seats in the middle doesn't even line up with a window IIRC) in comparative terms. Having said that the more close withdrawal dates for the GW HST sets means there is an argument for going to find them sooner rather than later after your exams.

For that you could maybe from London do SWR from Waterloo to Exeter on a 159 (maybe with a cheap Advance ticket to keep costs down there and back at start and end of the day - the earlier you go in the morning if very early likley to be cheaper tickets and you get more time in Cornwall) - then use a day rover or ranger (I think there is one?) for Devon and Cornwall to get from Exeter to Plymouth on any train permitted, then from there you would be with the GW HSTs for the day with unlimited rover ability to get on and off sets until time to get back to Exeter for a 159 home again.

Again the GW entries on RTT have the stock used listed from about midnight the night before which would help you find the HSTs when you get to the South West

The 125 Group are no longer doing diagrams but the info they do give is here and worth a look

For tickets using Rovers which gives you the flexibility on the day see here

For example I see for the South West you have a Devon Day Ranger and a Cornwall Day Ranger - £11.30 for Cornwall for the day with a railcard by looks of it

Ref 225s the advice above I would concur with - fairly reliably allocated to the services they are supposed to operate on so you could chance it with cheap advance tickets there and back.

My hunch would be that cheaper tickets are available in Advance before school holidays start and on mid week days (but probably not Fridays, sats and Sundays)

Hope this helps a bit

The TFW loco hauled Mk4 sets must be well worth seeking out - something I've not done myself yet

EDIT - for an HST 125 trip the 125 Group have this on sale with one of their sets at the moment which looks really good to me

This is only £35 for some interesting route mileage - if open to non members and looks like it is as it says 'the public' and I reckon you could get to Derby fairly cheaply on the Saturday morning from London and you are ending up in Reading so easy to get from there back to London which looks like where you are based.

SATURDAY 19 JULY – ONE-WAY TRANSIT TRIP FROM DERBY TO READING

In conjunction with the operation of the UK Railtours trip from Paddington to Pembroke and Tenby on Sunday 20th July, 125 Group is please to announce that the stock movement of the HST is being made available to the public as a one-way trip between Derby and Reading. Not only does that give the opportunity for folks from the Midlands and the South to ride our HST at a hugely discounted price, but it is also operating by a rare and interesting route around the West Midlands.
Our planned route is:
DEPART: DERBY approx 14:30

Just to be clear, this trip is absolutely available to anyone who wants to book - you do not have to be a 125 Group member.
