Seeing as we now have a number of HST Power Cars in preservation, but the only threads covering this are the tables in the HST and Mk3 Withdrawals thread, I thought I’d start one here. When I’m back home and on my computer, I’ll add the table here of currently preserved power cars and Mk3s).

To kick it off, The 125 Group has revealed 43159s new look, which is Midland Mainline’s later livery with Project Rio adornments. Note, although it isn’t finished yet (the paint is drying), it’s coming along nicely. You can also read about Project Rio in this months group mag with Part 2 due in the next issue.

I’ll try to do it in Table format later. So far we have (excluding LSLs as they are commercial use):

43000 / 41001 (NRM) - Prototype Power Car - NRM Shildon

43002 (NRM) - MTU - NRM York

43018 (Shell, Crewe Heritage Centre ) - Empty / Concrete

43023 (Private Owner / 125 Heritage) - MTU - Colne Valley

43025 (125 Group) - MTU - Ruddington

43044 (125 Group) Paxman Valenta - Ruddington

43045 (125 Preservation) - VP185 - Nene Valley

43048 (125 Group) - VP185 - Butterley

43056 (Gwili Railway) - MTU - Gwili Railway

43060 (125 Preservation) - VP185 - Nene Valley

43071 (125 Heritage) - MTU - Colne Valley

43073 (125 Heritage) - VP185 - Colne Valley

43081 (Crewe Heritage Centre) - VP185 - Crewe

43082 (125 Heritage) - VP185 - Colne Valley

43089 (125 Group) - VP185 - Butterley

43102 (NRM) - MTU - NRM Shildon

43159 (125 Group) - MTU - Butterley

43165 (125 Heritage) - MTU - Colne Valley

That looks lovely, really brining back memories.

This and the earlier Midland Mainline liveries really were nice.

Now made public via email this afternoon, 43025 is to join the 125 Group thanks to a very generous donation by a member. It is currently at Ely and ready to be roaded out.

That now brings the total of power cars in Preservation up - and 5 owned by the 125 group themselves.

The gwili railway have bought 43056, good home for it as they ran in south wales.

Believe got started up last year & think will.br a static exhibit, they've got a very twisty route as I found out from a recent visit a cupla weeks ago so it'd wear the tyres out pretty quick I imagine.

43056 was donated - as 43048/089/159 were to 125 Group - by Porterbrook. It's an important distinction from actually buying the vehicle.

The Gwilli Railway seems a slightly strange choice to put an HST power car, but it's still to be preserved so that's a good thing. If it means that it will attract more visitors, then that's even better!

Will there be a point where railways become overwhelmed with preserved power cars? Surely it’s better to preserve some rather than many!
Are the Gwili purchasing some mk3 coaches to run with it?

I wonder if it'll be static or running.

Are any of the preserved rakes of carriages compatible with HST power cars? There's not much point in preserving power cars if they can't earn money running excursions!

Yes: there are HST trailer vehicles preserved. 125 Group has nine of them, for example.

The PC was donated to the Welsh Railway Trust as a registered charity by Poterbrook to allow a PC to be preserved in Wales, thus representing the work of HST’s in the region.

There are no current plans to acquire any Mk3 carriages.

Can I ask please if anybody knows the fate of powercar 43308 formerly 43108.

Back in 1988 during a week of tv about the UK railways the powercar was named BBC Television Railwatch and I was just wondering if it was still in service anwhere or in storage.

Fair enough. I guess there isn't really many places in South Wales to choose from in terms of heritage railways. I'm not familiar with many at least!

It’s owned by RailAdventure and is stored at Eastleigh.

Thankyou for that, I wasn't sure if it had been 1 of the recent disposals to meet its end but good news that it survives

Though even with donated vehicles there's usually a nominal fee involved (often £1) for accounting purposes.

***proceeds to search down the back of the sofa, I quite fancy my own 1:1 scale power car*** ;)

I doubt 308 is ever likely to be seen back on the track though, along with 296 it was bought by RailAdventure as a source of spares for their 43/4s, never say never though
