I might miss my 2nd train as first one left late

I am on a Northern Rail train from Leeds to York, then I catch an LNER to Newcastle.

There was an 8 minute connection at York, but the NR train departed 4 minutes late

Yes, it might catch up time, but 4 minutes to change trains at York is pushing it .. certainly for someone with a senior Railcard.

What happens if I can't make it

Thanks

You take the next train of the same TOC* to your destination. If that means you get there more than 15 minutes late, you can claim Delay Repay from Northern. If you are on more than one ticket the sum this is based on is the sum of all the ticket prices.

* For these purposes, LNER, Northern, TPE and Southeastern (the latter obviously not very relevant) are one TOC. Grand Central obviously not, though if on a walk-up ticket you could also use them if you wanted.

You get the next suitable train out of LNER or TPE.

Advance ticket .. bought via LNER web site

Then as above. You can take the next LNER or TPE train (whichever is first; Northern don't operate that route and Southeastern is rather irrelevant :) ) to Newcastle, and claim Delay Repay against Northern if you arrive there 15 or more minutes late.

In this case it probably doesn’t make much difference, you simply get the first available LNER, TPE or Northern service anyway, it won’t be an issue, as others have already said.

LNER or TPE then, as Bletchleyite mentions above they together with Northern and Southeastern have a collective ticket acceptance in place when there are delays to your journey.

@Willie Bee. Are you on the 1416 departure from Leeds? Could be a tight connection if arriving late into York, if changing there for the onward 1455 LNER service up to Newcastle/Edinburgh, noting the likely change needed from platform 11 over to platform 5.

@Willie Bee. You might even be eligible for some 'Delay Repay' (from LNER) if arriving into Newcastle (your final destination?) some 15 or more minutes down. Every little helps, and all that!

Curiously, from past experience, if the Northern train would have missed the connection had the LNER not been late, the DR will come from Northern. I had a similar issue with Avanti and TPE with a connection at Manchester Piccadilly - the TPE ended up well over an hour late but I'd not have caught it had it been on time due to the Avanti being about 20 late. I submitted with TPE and they sent it to Avanti who paid it without question for the full hour.

Believe the LNER arrival at Newcastle was just 13 minutes down, so, if correct, that'll be no valid 'Delay Repay' claim possible?

Seems this applies even if the second train is cancelled - a few months ago I was connecting from XC to Avanti at Birmingham New Street, and the Avanti was cancelled when I arrived at BHM, delaying me over an hour, so I put in delay repay with them.

Avanti rejected it (after sitting on it for 5 weeks...) and sent it to XC, and looking back at my records I assume this is because the XC was slightly delayed to the extent that I only had 9 minutes connection time at BHM rather than the 'minimum' of 12. I didn't think about that when submitting the claim as I'd still have easily made the connection if the Avanti hadn't been cancelled, XC didn't really cause me any delay at all.

In any event, XC approved the claim within 24 hours and I had the vouchers in the post within 3 days, which contrasts very favourably with the over-a-month that Avanti sat on the claim!

Pretty sure LNER only pay out if the delay is over 30 minutes as they never changed to the 15-minute scheme used by other operators
