I surprisingly discovered today London Northwestern Railway announcing that they will run 2tph on their Liverpool - Birmingham route during the RMT strike on Saturday 13th May. Of course, this is only in the middle of the day and services still start earlier / finish later than usual, but it seems a strange anomaly given that this route hasn't enjoyed 2tph since the start of 2020. Does anyone know of any particular reason why this would be the case?

London Northwestern Railway services will operate to a reduced timetable on the below routes only. Services will operate between the hours of 0700 – 1900. The majority of other operators are also impacted.

  • Birmingham New Street – Northampton – London Euston (2 trains per hour Birmingham - London and 2 trains per hour Milton Keynes - London)
  • Birmingham New Street – Birmingham International (1 train per hour via local stations)
  • Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton (1 train per hour via local stations)
  • Birmingham New Street – Crewe – Liverpool Lime Street (2 trains per hour)
  • Birmingham New Street – Rugeley Trent Valley via Walsall (1 train per hour)

I wonder if there are any other routes with an enhanced frequency on strike days.

No Trent Valley service. Possibly to provide a connection from a Euston Brum to a Liverpool service at New St.

Not if the last one out of Liverpool is 1808 it isnt and only goes as far as Crewe.
Plenty of trains to get people  to Liverpool though, especially those with accommodation bookings who will be travelling home the next day. Given what time Eurovision usually runs until, I can't imagine a huge number of people would have had the option of a train home even on a non-strike day

In general it’s possible to run more services now that signallers are no longer striking, just guards and other TOC grades. Contingency guards are fairly plentiful at most TOCs now.
