The UK really needs to follow the German style of passenger announcements. Concise. To the point. Minimal formality/fluff. No advertising.

e.g. a typical (translated) German announcement goes something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome aboard <train number> to <destination> we will be calling at <stations>. The cafe is in coach <number>. We wish you a pleasant journey."

This.

Swiss (SBB) announcements are similar in style, but usually in at least 2 languages, and often English as well. They manage it without it seeming like the patronising over-the-top piffle some TOCs here put out.

Northern 155346 had faulty PA both before and after its refurbishment. There's clearly something like a broken wire or dry solder joint between the microphone and the amplifier as it crackles, hums and cuts out on every single announcement. But it's been like that for so long now, I guess nobody really cares. Obviously there aren't any automated recorded announcements on a Northern 15x anyway.
