A friend has booked a short break in London and has been given an "Inclusive tour package" rail ticket. She has seats booked on Grand Central 1022 Bradford Interchange to London KX and return two days later by LNER at 1803 changing at Leeds (both midweek). The return ticket seems valid for a month and the route is "Any permitted". The words "Low rate tickets" also appear. Does anybody know what restrictions apply?

Can you post a redacted (booking reference, ticket number, name etc.) picture of the ticket?

Details below. Low rate tickets are not available on high days (Fridays, Sundays and bank Holidays (some days around Bank Holidays may also be High days).

Validity (iKB)
  • Tickets are valid for outward travel on the date shown or on either of the following two days, and for return within one calendar month, or as clearly indicated on the ticket. They may also be used on an overnight service departing the previous evening for arrival at the destination on the date shown.
  • Same day return is allowed.
  • Tickets are High Rate (valid all days) or Low Rate (not valid on specified High Days for the year - please check the ITX calendar for dates).
  • Low rate is a day restriction only, not a time restriction
  • Low Rate is not a SSR. Time restrictions for both High and Low rate are: Not valid for travel on any trains arriving in London before 10:00 Mondays to Fridays unless:
  • the train commenced its journey before 02:00, or
  • the passenger is travelling to a destination outside the UK (the passenger’s holiday documents will confirm this); or
  • they are travelling with SAGA Holidays (agency code E429) and have to make onwards connections.
  • Supporting documentation must be carried and shown on request. This documentation entitles passengers to travel on these tickets that allow travel at times when other off-peak tickets would be barred, so should be checked.
  • Not transferable.
  • No break of journey.
  • No First Class upgrade except at times when Weekend First is available.
  • Valid by all operators, and by ‘Any Permitted’ route unless stated otherwise.
  • Excess Arrangements: These tickets are issued as ‘High rate and ‘Low rate’, the latter being valid on what used to be called ‘blue’ Supersaver days only (see 3rd bullet point above) .The SVR Off-Peak” fare should be used for excess purposes (for Low rate, calculate as super Off-Peak where available).

Thanks that helps a lot.

Her real concern was about flexibility. Reading the above, can I assume the ticket is valid on any train or not just the one she's booked on? And if it is flexible, that there aren't any peak time restrictions? I know some off-peak tickets are not valid 1459-1859 M-TH (1815 F) while other more expensive ones are not valid 1559-1745 M-TH. The 1833 KGX to Forster Square might be a nice alternative to catch if permitted.

I'll try and get her to send me a photo of the tickets but it might not be easy as I don't live in Bradford any more.

I hadn't heard about iKB. I think she booked with Superbreak who advertise "Flexible travel with fewer restrictions". Booking hotels and trains together sounds like a good way around peak travel restrictions if its true.

As the quoted text says, there are no afternoon time restrictions but no break of journey.

It's ages since we had Blue days (the idea came from SNCF) but ISTR Maundy Thursday would be one, all Fridays and Summer Saturdays, but in any case I imagine the lady will be travelling home on the booked day.

I don't see any need for a photo of the tickets. The validity is straightforward, as posted by OwlMan

Morning restrictions only, as quoted above.
