OK, I have almost given up trying to get Railworks 2 to install (good job this forum exists in that case :)), I posted on the STEAM forum and had no luck.

Basically, the STEAM update window appears and then the following error:

http://postimage.org/image/2shnvyb2c/

I think it is because I am using a 02 Dongle.
Since its a connection issue rather than a hardware issue I don't really know what technical info to supply, other than what is below;

My dongle is O2, I'm not connected through a Proxy.
I checked my firewall, virus security and Task Manager for any interfering options/processes and as far as I'm aware everything appears to be in an operative state.

I wish I had just got Trainz.

Thanks for the help and listening*to my whining and ranting :)

*Figure of speech

Windows 7 32 bit.
Just the default firewall.

EDIT:
Just re checked, STEAM is definitely allowed through it.

Quick Google search brings up this

Looks like O2 could be blocking the ports Steam use

I have heard of mobile providers blocking various ports on their dongles, probably in some cases for security and in this case possibly to stop people hammering what bandwidth they have

I take it you are installing RW2 via the Steam website?

It's much easier to just buy the boxed copy. Takes about five minutes.

There's only one solution I can offer.

If you are really desperate to get RW2 working you could try the following:

1) Disconnect your internet
2) Then turn your Wi-Fi back on and scan for networks
3) Locate a BT hosted network such as 'BT Openzone' or 'BTFON'.
4) Connect and open your browser.

I know this is not ideal, but pop in your card number and they'll give you free access for a limited amount of time. I think it's £5 for an hour or £15 for three days; something like that.

Not applicable now I am afraid. As the product is constantly evolving, even installation from the boxed copy will require Steam to verify which version this is, then download all of the updates since that version to bring it up to date. this can amount to quite a lot.

No, I am using the box copy.

I just had brainwave:

I tried my 3 dongle in my pc, but that won't connect to the internet at all.
I then went on the old pc, (which accepts the 3 dongle) and got the download version of STEAM and tried to update that. That worked, so now I just need to configure the 3 dongle on the current pc.

Thanks everybody.
I will post back with results :)

Excellent!

Look forward to hearing how you get on. Railworks 2 is well worth the installation pain, trust me! :)
