*International* Guess The Station

At first, I thought it was a Chinese design—possibly in China or another country with significant economic influence. (Snow ruled out Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Sudan, etc.).

But I was wrong. When I found it (after much searching on Wikipedia), I realised it's actually a Turkish design, in Astana / Nurly Zhol.

Although Astana is of course the capital of Kazakhstan.

What I meant to write is that irrespective of location, the design of the station looked like the template Chinese high-speed railway station being built all over the world as part of the Belt and Road initiative. It was a surprise to discover that the architects (and perhaps also the construction consortium) was Turkish.

Correct! It's Astana Nurly Zhol - opened in 2017 and quite a different experience from the other station in the city, Astana-1, opened in 1929.

In the foreground of the photo is the terminal station of the under construction LRT system (fairly similar to the DLR in London, but just a single line for now). It started construction in 2017, was paused in 2019 and got the go-ahead to continue construction in 2023. Since then the progress has been pretty rapid - the current (aggressive) target is to start testing by the end of this year and carry passengers next year.

Credit for the photo is newtimes.kz.

Well, from Astana (a place I want to visit) to a place I visited earlier this week.

I saw this station from a bus, rather than a train. I was on my way from the airport to the city centre. The small station is being rebuilt and expanded.

It has been flagged to me that a station under construction may not entirely fit the [albeit vague] criteria for the game. Happy for wider thoughts and to see how it goes? :)

Station exists and has service currently. That’s because it’s…

Ülemiste

Tallinn-Ülemiste, the new northern terminus of Rail Baltica :E In fact I was annoyed to have missed seeing (by just a few minutes) the daily southbound departure towards LT.

Dammit - I searched Tallin and it didnt look like this. Now I realise I was looking at Tallinn Baltic - the main Railway Station and not the Airport Railway Station. There is also Tallinn Port Railway Station.

Great start. But not right. I guess Riga station is also under reconstruction right now (although I’ve not visited yet.)
Only got that far by googling for a shopping centre that contains KFC, Vapiano and Sinsay, which were the only signs I could make out!

For what it’s worth, I was there later the same day. I didn’t post my photos of Tallinn Baltic because I thought it was probably a little too well known.

Loved Tallinn, shame it was only a 24hr work trip. Will try to travel Umeå - Vaasa - Helsinki - Tallinn … - Poland - Germany - Denmark - back to Sweden sometime in 2026.

Nice Trip! I was very impressed with Latvia last year - based in Riga although we took the train out to the Beaches and Forest at Jurmala. Lovely New Trains too. Would like to return and explore the region further and maybe do the Vilnius - Riga - Tallin portions utilising the new Rail Baltica.

Here's a hint, most guesses so far have been near the wrong Sendai station...

Another hint. The train in the shot is a JR Kyushu 885 series, which has a fairly limited area of operation. This station is on one of its key routes.
