Hi all,

In a few weeks time I'm travelling to Bestival on the Isle of Wight via train (which sounds like immense fun [!]), but I'm having a bit of bother getting the right ticket. The Bestival website says that a ticket to Ryde Pier Head will include the journey over to the Island, so could save me money versus buying separate train and ferry tickets. However, whilst I got the fare to appear once (I recall it being around £61), the session expired and when I tried to load it again, it told me that no tickets were found for the journey, nor could it do it to Ryde Hoverport (another route the website advises). Am I doing something wrong? I can find a fare to Shanklin which includes the catamaran journey across, but oddly not the fare without the Island Line journey to Shanklin on it at the moment?!

Any help greatly received, if there's a cheaper fare I've missed, feel free to point me in the direction of it! ;)I have a 16-25 railcard, travelling to arrive on the Island around 12:30 on 08/09/16, leaving the island around 15:00 on 12/09/16.

I'd suggest getting a ticket to Ryde Esplanade as that will include a short train ride down the pier to the esplanade, to where connecting buses, taxis etc will be

A through ticket to one of the Ryde stations includes the ferry from Portsmouth Harbour but not the catamaran. Expect a bit of queueing at Portsmouth.

Did Bestival in 2012 (by train and ferry) and loved it, have a great time!

I'm not sure of the situation now, but rail card discount was only applicable to the train portion of the journey (well in 1988!!) so I had to buy separate tickets.

The Catamaran is the normal passenger ferry from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head and is included in the through Rail tickets.
for the Hovercraft you need to buy a ticket to Ryde Hoverport.
The car ferry goes from Gunwharf Rd Portsmouth which is 10 to 15 mins walk from Portsmouth Harbour Station to Fishbourne on the IOW but doesn't have through rail fares. Fishbourne is about 4 miles from Bestival.

Maybe it's just me but I'm finding the National Rail website a bit of a pain to use when sorting this out, for the Esplanade journey it only gives me ticket prices for the return portion, and not the outward part. It can, however, give me a full itinerary if I goto Ryde St. Johns Road - this does include the catamaran crossing, am I right?

Bit concerned by the return itinerary it offers - 12:47 ferry to Portsmouth, arrive 13:09, then get a train from Portsmouth Harbour at 13:15 - is this doable?

Thanks!

Going to any station on the island includes the catamaran.

The connection at Portsmouth Harbour looks normal to me and is very doable.

I did the 1847 catamaran onto the 1915 to Havant a few Saturdays ago, I could've boarded the 1912 too. That connection is an official connection and shown on posters on Island Line stations.

Don't worry too much about the connection.

Me again, promise I've nearly got this sorted! I'm planning on getting the 0909 from Ipswich, which arrives into Liverpool Street around 1020. The National Rail website then says I should get the 1130 out of Waterloo to Portsmouth, taking a Central and then Bakerloo line train departing 1030ish and arriving 1102 - am I allowed to just take the Waterloo and City line, slashing the journey time and allowing me to catch the 1100 to Portsmouth? I have an off-peak ticket so I assume the 1100 train is fine, just questioning whether Waterloo and City is allowed on my ticket (I can't see why not), as the National Rail website doesn't suggest it.

You'll need to get the Central line from Liverpool Street to Bank to pick up the W&C. With your ticket you can't walk to Bank to start the Underground transfer there, but you could use an Oyster or contactless card at additional cost. (Or you could ask the barrier staff nicely to let you in which may work.)

If you get to Waterloo in time for the 1100 (which is doable) you can get that instead of the 1130.

Oh yeah, should have said I know I need to catch a train to Bank for Waterloo and City, but that's great then! Strange that the NR website doesn't suggest it as it's a short journey from it slices the journey time cross-London and the overall journey too!

According to this website http://www.oyster-rail.org.uk/osi-list/ you should be able to either change Central to W&C at Bank or walk from Liverpool Street to Bank using your through ticket. Admittedly this is for Oyster cards, but the same rules should work.

It doesn't work because Bank has an OSI, it works because Bank is a recognised station for cross London transfer as listed here:

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46587.aspx#travelling_connect

It's all about the "+" cross London marker on the through ticket. OSIs as per Mike's Oyster website are only about linking journeys for PAYG.
