We (1A + 1C) are travelling to Stevenage from Chichester tomorrow (Thursday 20th) and are planning to travel using an Off-Peak Return, costing £77.55.

Upon researching other stations, we discovered that the same ticket from Havant was cheaper, and seemed to show no signs of a fixed route or restrictions on break of journey. I therefore have a few questions.

Can this ticket be used when starting at Chichester?

Do the rules allow a break of journey in London on the return?

Thanks in advance!

A Family and Friends Railcard will pay for itself on this trip so I'd recommend getting one. (£44+£28 < £77)

Havant is an associated RP for Chichester and since it passes the fare check they are essentially the same station as far as routeing is concerned.

I therefore have a few questions.

I see no problem with this but hopefully someone can clarify if BoJ is valid on the outbound portion.

Do the rules allow a break of journey in London on the return?

Yes.

Restriction 4J, valid after 0930 and no BoJ restrictions.

A Network Railcard is fine too (depending on where OP is likely to travel in future and with whom).

£40.40 1A1C (FAM or NSE) Havant-Stevenage SVR.

Thanks SS4 and LexyBoy!

We have decided to take the plunge and buy the railcard, hopefully there will be no queues at the ticket office tomorrow!

Essentially you are asking whether a Havant-Stevenage ticket is valid via Chichester. To answer, this, we use the National Routeing Guide, available here:
http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide

First, we find that Havant is a routeing point.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 29

Stevenage is also a routeing point.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 57

The only routeing permission for Havant-Stevenage is London.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 414

Routeing permissions for Havant-London Group are:
CW+LB CW+SC CW+SC+LB CW+SD+LB LP PD
PD+SC
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/permitted_route_identifier.pdf page 412

CW+LB gives:
CW: Havant-Ford-Brighton http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 24
LB: Brighton-Three-Bridges-Gatwick-Redhill-Croydon-various routes into London http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf page 57

So yes, you may use such a ticket via Chichester.

CW+SC allows you to travel via Horsham, saving the detour into Brighton. See http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/Maps.pdf pages 24 & 95 for the routes you can take with this permission.

Lexy Boy has fully answered the question about break of journey.
