The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and older freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the last of the 9F standards, the pilot scheme main line diesels, diesel multiple units and diesel shunting engines. Thirty engines condemned were built post the 1923 grouping with the youngest engine condemned being London and North Eastern Railway J50 0-6-0T 68978 at only twenty years old.

A number I have photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome.

All Our Yesterdays – 55 Years Ago – November 1963

Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington and Derby building class 25’s, Swindon and Crewe building class 52 Westerns and Doncaster building class 85 electrics. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.

New locomotives:
Class 17 – D8550/57/58/59/60/61/62
Class 25 – D5232, D7575/76/77/78
Class 37 – D6883/84/86, D6904/05/06/07/08/10
Class 47 – D1684/85/86/87/88/89/90/91/92
Class 52 – D1025 Western Guardsman, D1071 Western Renown, D1072 Western Glory
Class 85 – E3093

Following the all time monthly high of two hundred and thirty nine locomotives condemned in September withdrawals continued around the two hundred mark with two hundred and three locomotives spread over fifty three steam classes and one diesel class condemned in the month. Another British Railways Standard engine, class 2, 2-6-0 78015 was condemned in the month which was less than ten years old. From now on the steam fleet would not only be affected by the dieselization programme but the effects of the Beeching Report and the associated closures would also start to become apparent.

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – November 1968

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see two Class 50 locomotives delivered.

New Locomotives
Class 50 – D446/47

The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

D5504/05/35/54, D5657/95

With the main line steam now all withdrawn attention now focused on the small or non-standard diesel shunter and the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleets. Shunter condemnations decreased from fifteen to ten and main line diesel condemnations decreased from thirty five to only seven. Condemned this month were two Class 14’s, two Class 17 Clayton type 1’s, two North British Class 22’s and one accident damaged Class 33 BRCW type 3. Finally an accident damaged Class 81 AL1 AC electric locomotives was condemned. At least one of the November withdrawals has escaped being broken up, Class 14 D9526
