Diesel and electric locomotive building was in full swing with British Railways workshops at Darlington and Derby building class 25’s Swindon and Crewe building class 52 Westerns and Crewe building class 47’s. Locomotive contractors were also in production with English Electric building at Vulcan Foundry and also at the Robert Stephensons and Hawthorn works, Darlington class 37’s, Clayton at Derby were building class 17’s and Brush were building class 47’s at Loughborough.
New locomotives:

Class 25 – D5261/62/63/64/65/66/67, D7589/90/91
Class 37 – D6896/97, D6933/34/35/36
Class 47 – D1563/71/72/73/74/75/76/77, D1727/28/29/30/32/36
Class 52 – D1029 Western Legionnaire, D1034 Western Dragoon
Main line diesel production in the month decreased slightly from the previous month to thirty three and it would appear that D1563 suffered some issue during construction/test as it was delivered significantly out of sequence from Crewe works. Steam withdrawals in the month increased sharply from the preceding few months at one hundred and sixty four locomotives condemned (spread over thirty six classes), however this was still about a half of the monthly totals at the end of 1963. It was also another bad month for Austerity 2-8-0s, with twenty eight condemned, Great Western 57xx Pannier tanks, with seventeen condemned and Fowler 4F 0-6-0s with fourteen condemned. However at least one, Great Western Railway 2-6-0 5322 escaped being broken up and still survives today
