Hello all, looking for any tips on journey planning for a specific need, I appreciate this is quite niche so there may not be tools for it but if there are someone here will know!

My wife is looking to take her nan for a weekend away early autumn, probably somewhere seaside-y; they’ll need to use train and would prefer minimal connections. Options from our closest stations are limited but we can easily get to Crewe, Derby or Nottingham. Is there an easy way to find all the possible destinations from a given station? Network maps are fine but you have to go company by company. Any pointers gratefully received!

Chronotrains is a useful tool - it's not an official one at all but it seems to work well. Enter your station and a maximum travelling time and it will show you where you can go to.

There is also a map of all stations, with lines coloured by train company. It's not perfect necessarily in showing where and how you need to connect but it should make planning easier.

Intuitively, from the stations you mention, then North Wales or Blackpool (From Crewe), Lincolnshire or Bridlington/Scarborough (from Nottingham/Derby) are likely to be the easiest to get to.

Thanks for the replies, I’ll give those a go. She was hoping for Llandudno but without trekking in from Junction it’s hit and Miss, especially at the weekend. Colwyn Bay could be a good option though I think.

From Nottingham and Derby, you’ve got Crewe accessible by one through train, which gives you access to most of the North Wales coast, with destinations such as Llandudno and Bangor. You’ve also got a few direct trains a day from Crewe to Blackpool, although this can also be accessed fairly easily by changing at Wigan (which involves one easy cross-platform change) or at Preston (which can be a bit more of a difficult change).

You’ve also got one train an hour from Nottingham to Skegness, and these trains can also be accessed from Derby with just one extra train.

From Nottingham or Derby, you could also go the short hop to Sheffield, and, depending on when they’re planning on travelling, you should be able to get direct trains to Bridlington and Scarborough. They could also get the train from Nottingham direct to Leeds every hour, and get a bus from there to Scarborough or Whitby (the latter of which I would not recommend wholly by train in their situation as it would be a few changes from Derby or Nottingham).

Maybe not quite as good, but BR Times will certainly show all the (direct) trains from a given station for the next fortnight.

Further to my post, you can also use the forum’s ticket site, obtained from the top banner. You can punch in places you can think they might want to go, and put in maximum number of changes, and also allow more time at the stations they change at, over and above the minimum connection times. If it doesn’t generate an itinerary, then you can rule out that destination.
