I see that on the Jubilee the line maps have got stickers over Stratford station showing the interchanges, now including the train link to Southend Airport.

However they do not have any additional airport link shown for Canning Town, just to the DLR.

Now I might just be wrong, but I would be most surprised if more than the odd few per day travel by the Jubilee to get to the airport at Southend. In contrast, large numbers use it to get to London City airport through Canning Town and the DLR. So I just wonder how an airport 30 miles beyond TfL's service area has managed to get LU to actually change their maps with an overlay sticker, while one which is in London, right on the TfL network, and for which the Jubilee forms a principal access route, does not.

Ad I wonder how much all the many users of London City Airport station pay TfL each day. And indeed, how much the airport contributed to the station construction cost there.

The difference would be London City Airport is actually on the tube map. If, on the tube map, an airport symbol was put at Canning Town, it would suggest that is where you go for that airport. However by having one at Stratford for Southend, it is showing that that is where you go if you're heading to the airport.

That's a good point. Presumably the map doesn't indicate a Heathrow connection at Green Park.

I thought the sticker was for TfL Rail, and that Southend Airport was included before? :?

Gatwick, Luton and Stansted are also shown where they are one change from a Tube station (ie from Thameslink stations, Liverpool Street, etc). As above, Heathrow and City aren't as they are on the map anyway.

Also why is there no direct bus from Canary Wharf to City Airport? No demand as everyone gets taxis?

Yes, no bus at all between Canary Wharf and Canning Town (at least) is an enormous omission in my opinion. Canning Town is a major bus, LUL and DLR interchange, while Canary Wharf estate is a big employer and also has leisure facilities in the area. Best option probably 330 or D7.

As for the journey to/from City Airport, I'd imagine many would use the DLR and cross-platform change at Poplar. A bigger bonus if they already have a season ticket including Zones 2 & 3.

Presume you're referring to City Airport, not the City itself which is linked by the 135 (though you'd have to be an extreme skinflint to use it instead of the DLR for that journey).

Canary Wharf and Canning Town are about 2min apart by the Jubilee Line, so it's unsurprising there is no bus alternative. Changing from the Jubilee to DLR there would always beat any through bus or the all-DLR route between Canary Wharf and City Airport.

The map I was referring to was line strip map, not the tube map, and this doesn't have reference to any airport other than Southend.

In earlier years there was an airport-supported shuttle bus to Canary Wharf, it was discontinued when the DLR opened. The airport has long been discussing with TfL having direct airport (Woolwich) to Canary Wharf services, but they have not got anywhere. It is actually significantly quicker by road/taxi between the two than by DLR with the change at Poplar, while although the Jubilee to Canning Town may be speedy once in the train, it takes several minutes from the station entrance to get all the way down to the platform, and in the evening peak it can be two or even three trains before you can then squeeze into one, not the best way if you have luggage with you.

I still don't get how Southend Airport, out in the wilds of Essex and which I have never met anyone who has flown from there on one of their handful of flights a day, managed to get on the Jubilee Line car strip map ahead of established airports actually in TfL's service area.

Here's the DLR system map, with the airport logo at London City Airport.

Take a look above for the 2015 updates to line car diagrams and you'll see where else has the airport symbol. You'll note that Gatwick and Stansted are also shown at interchange points despite not being within the TFL area.

If you look at the Waterloo & City line you'll see it doesn't have an airport interchange symbol, despite the ability to change onto the DLR for London City or the Central to Liv St for services to Stansted/Southend. I don't follow how that's different to not having one at Canary Wharf - because there is a better station on the TFL network to have that symbol associated with, when travelling to any of those airports, including LCY.

Surely not forward planning for when they both airports are added to the Oyster area in September 2015 (rumoured).
