Do any of you have any preferences for jumpers or fleeces?, wool or man made fibres?

I ask this, as over a few drinks in the pub on Saturday night a heated discussion came up, as they often do after a few beers on various topics.!

I am not quite sure how it started, but this was on the subject of the advantages/disadvantages between wearing in the colder weather and generally infact, fleeces which are made from man made fibres or Pullovers / Jumpers / Sweaters which were traditionally made from wool, but also from cotton or man made fibres.

I am not keen on fleeces which I find are too bulky and not that warm, I far prefer proper wool pullovers and not made from man made fibres or cotton. I find they keep you warm and look & feel good. In one of my jobs, we did have those heavy ribbed uniform type wool jumpers, with shoulder & elbow patches which I still wear now. Along with some other good chunky style sweaters as well as lighter lambswool garments.

(It's funny how many different names this item of clothing has; Jumper, Pullover, Sweater, jersey, guernsey, gansey, wooly etc.)

I think from my hazy memory at the end of the evening, that sweaters won the day.

I prefer natural like wool but I rarely wear one (it's not that cold in this country) and if I'm going out I'll go for waterproofing instead

Yes, I agree, natural fibres are better. Mind you in the recent weather I think a lot of waterproofing clothing will have been worn by many people.

If by fleeces you mean something recently removed from a sheep then I can see why they'd be too bulky but modern man-made fibre fleeces are not as bulky as woolly jumpers. And easier to wash and less likely to shrink.

For me it all depends on what I am actually doing as to whether I wear my one fleece I own or ajumper.

Don't like the look of fleeces, so usually a man made jumper for me, wool irritates my skin too much.

I was referring to man made fibre fleeces which I am not keen on.

I prefer a Guernsey (Gansey), but they're not cheap

Yes proper Guernseys, made in Guernsey, Channel Islands from Oiled wool are fantastic, I have had a Navy Blue one for a long time. True the real ones are expensive, but they will last for very many years and are very warm and hardwearing even in bad weather.

There is a small firm in Cornwall called sou'west chunkies who make chunky mens knitwear and also a variation on the Guernsey, a Gansey. Their products are very good, wool, made in the UK and can be done as a round (Crew) neck or also as roll necks. I have a roll neck gansey from them and also a roll neck & crew neck big chunky sweaters from them and again they are excellent. :D

What about sweatshirts?

When I'm working in a cold area I tend to prefer one of these as it affords a nice amount of protection from the cold but doesn't flap about at the edges and get in the way.

Otherwise I do prefer fleaces rather than wool or wool like jumpers, but having now a total of two sweatshirts and one non-zipping fleace (I'm exclusing those classed as jackets) it depends entirely on what I'm doing and where I am (one of the sweatshirts is Hi Visibility Orange with Tapes)

In very cold weather I sometimes wear a sweatshirt over a tee shirt and under a jumper, layering can be very good for keeping one warm.

I also like the proper cricket off white sweaters, even though I have have an "incident" with said sweater being worn by another large bloke, a large cup of black coffee and spillage. It worked out expensive for me.
