Just don't travel.... oh and "you can't use a train, that goes to the place on your ticket".

Since the passenger bought a new ticket in circumstances where Hull Trains was obliged to re-route them, would there be a valid claim for reimbursement of the additional ticket cost, here?
If the passenger asked for advice and was told to go via Manchester, arguably they were entitled to assume they were being re-routed.
The problem is that they were advised to go via Manchester and Euston, which they could have done in a similar time (despite the Woking issues yesterday), for no extra cost - and with 100% delay repay.

Thst said, I agree that in this case (and more clearly for, say, Reading or Oxford) the XC option (or any other permissible route) should be allowed.

Saying "don't travel today" assumes you are starting from home, or easy reach of home. If you've checked out of a hotel and need to get to home, or elsewhere, it's totally unhelpful. Must we all now carry an extra night's change of clothes and spare toiletries, plus have enough funds available on our credit card for an unscheduled night in a hotel? Assuming a hotel room can be found if there's widespread rail disruption.

Perhaps the question should be, instead of "can I board this (other operator's) train?", rather "who do I see regarding a taxi or a hotel?". Might make the number crunchers in rail finance review these situations.

During the issues on WCML between Lancaster and Oxenholme on Wednesday, Avanti only had ticket acceptance with TPE.

Which seems about as useful as a chocolate teapot...
