I had to go to King's Cross from a South Eastern station today and thought the best way was to transfer to First Capital Connect at London Bridge; with an easy interchange at both London Bridge and St Pancras - Kings Cross instead of struggling with steps to the Tube.

Imagine my surprise to find that there was no Capital Connect train from d1615 to d1727; over an hour compared to 15 min service earlier in the day.

Seems strange. Anyone know why? Congestion?

Yes, it's congestion - there are no paths available between London Bridge and Blackfriars so they route them via Tulse Hill at that time of day.

Apparently set to get much, much worse from 2015 to 2018 - no Thameslink trains to stop at London Bridge at all!

Actually its from Dec 2014 until 2nd Jan 2018. There's no way you can keep the current service with the massive amount of work.

Of course its still debatable if the limited off peak service from London Bridge to Brighton is still a Thameslink service (which may depend on the winning bidder).

I too have been caught out in the past trying to get from London Bridge to Farringdon in the peak. Most Thameslink avoid London Bridge taking the Herne Hill route.

As both the peaks to/from Charing Crosss see upwards of 24 trains an hour each way (29 tph in the morning), there is simply no space in the timetable to route FCC services through London Bridge, via the two track section at Borough Market, and then into the single lead at Met Jn.

Hence the Thameslink Programme.

Indeed. In fact from early January next year the track that permits the moves will have been taken out. From then on London bridge becomes three separate railways with no rail connections between them:

1) Southern into Low Level
2) southeastern from fast lines at New Cross to Charing Cross (not stopping London Bridge)
3) southeastern from slow / Greenwich lines to Cannon St (stopping at London Bridge).
