Passenger on a train today worked by a colleague held a ticket from Lancing to Eastbourne, CDR (and a freedom pass) claimed that this ticket was valid to London. They said not and charged them. Punter paid up, but claimed they had used that ticket many times before. I'm guess valid via Haywards Heath at the most. Thoughts?

Lancing is not a Routeing Point, and the only appropriate routeing point for this particular fare is the Brighton Group. So that means map CW only. So no, not valid! (unless they can produce an itinerary, of course... which is doubtful!)

Admitting to having used it "many times before" was probably not the best thing to confess to, either!

Not valid. Taking the pee.

Map CW only, ie. along the coast only.

I can imagine tickets for places further apart along the coast being valid, eg. north Kent to Dorset, but not Lancing to Eastbourne.

I would be fairly happy to accept it via Haywards Heath as it's not too far off route, and in some cases (especially, say, a cancellation from Brighton) I suppose it may be quicker, giving a bit of decent customer service.

Anything further on that, in line with the above, really is pushing it way too far. Out of interest, was said ticket check between Haywards Heath and East Croydon? I can imagine that "many times before" may be stretching the truth of "nobody really checked between Haywards Heath and London, it was accepted at some point before that, and I didn't have to ever explain myself".

I cant find the routing guide atm but there used to be an easement that allowed passengers from stations West of West Worthing travelling to Eastbourne and beyond to travel via Haywards Heath so a Lancing Ticket is defiantly not valid via London (or Haywards Heath). Id suggest that what the passenger had really wanted was a Lancing to East Croydon ticket which with a Freedom Pass would be valid to London and was probably misheard by the ticket clerk. If it is at a time super off peak tickets were valid its cheaper than a boundary zone 6 ticket as theres no super off peak fare.

Easement 15 said "Passengers travelling from Worthing and stations west of Worthing to Polegate and stations east of Polegate may go via Haywards Heath. This easement applies in both directions."

As far as I know, it was introduced in 1997 and removed in 2013.

There's more than one way to interpret this easement, but if you say "you can use a Lancing-Haywards Heath route followed by a Haywards Heath-Eastbourne one", this wouldn't have allowed what this customer was attempting here in 1997 or 2013.

Lancing and Haywards Heath were associated with Brighton, and Haywards Heath and Eastbourne both with Lewes, so the only extra route this gives is one where you double back between Wivelsfield and Haywards Heath.
