Hi,

Is it possible to do a loop journey on the train going Leeds - Carlisle, then from Carlisle south along the Cumbrian coast line (I'm thinking of doing this when it goes to LH) and eventually back round to Leeds in a day, leaving at 9am-ish?

EDIT: To clarify, I mean going back across the pennines to Leeds rather than back to Carlisle first.

I have also done it all in a day, again comfortably :)
I know I used the same word, but we're talking about Northern!

In hindsight, is comfort the most appropriate word?! I meant timewise and I suspect you did too, but couldn't resist myself!

Here is one suggestion, but you could start with an earlier train if you wanted.
(Based on Monday to Friday)

Leeds 08:49 to Carlisle 11:32 (Northern)
Carlisle 11:50 to Barrow in Furness 14:19 (Northern)
Barrow in Furness 14:40 to Manchester Piccadilly 16:56 (Wilmslow train) (First Trans Pennine)
Manchester Piccadilly 17:11 Leeds 18:12 (Scarborough train) (First Trans Pennine)

9 hours 23 minutes in total.

Are you aware of and able to get one of the £10 Northern tickets? If so, you'd need to plan to make use of the following trains south out of Barrow:

15:18 (arr Carnforth at 16:11, for the 16:32 to Leeds)
18:03 (arr Carnforth at 18:55, for the 19:34 to Leeds or arr Preston 19:32 for the 19:37 to Leeds)

Both of these services run through from Carlisle, departing at 12:47 and 15:12 respectively.

He's talking about doing it after the loco hauleds start. Through services might be different then. (probably will be actually) The 15:12 off Carlisle has however been quoted as a poss for the loco hauled and will be through to Preston if it is, so that's the best option probably. A bit tight at Preston, but you could bail at Carnforth if you're running late.

Is the £10 Northern Rail ticket still valid? Says on the website "printed until 23 Jan".

Cumbria Day Ranger is valid from Skipton. Means coming back via Bentham.

I did this leaving Leeds towards Carlisle at 8:XX comfortably with time for a few jars in the Merchants in Lancaster on the way round. Not sure how that would fit in with any loco hauled though !
