Any ideas on getting the return price down from £239 for 4 people?
no railcards..
travelling on a monday off peak coming back thursday off peak for either of the first 3 weeks in december

I have friends and family with EMT £15 from any EMT station so I could use it to Man Pic and get a fare from there?

Yes, try splitting at Manchester.

TPE have very cheap fares available but they are TPE only, no connections. So splitting is the only way to get them.

It's also worth looking at using EMT to Warrington Central, and then you can get a (Virgin-priced) advance fare from Warrington Bank Quay to Barrow-in-Furness, changing at Preston for a Northern or TPE service. Fares are available on this route from £9.
