Here's a new 'riddle' quiz from backontrack, who says:

The person with the floor posts a rather cryptic post. In this post, there will be clues which, when correctly deciphered, create letters. The letters in turn will create a station name, which needs to be guessed correctly.

Example

(Words in italic are key to solving the riddle.)

My first is in Ovaltine, Cocoa and Hot Chocolate.
My second’s in blimp, and it’s also quite limp.
My third is in never, but won’t appear in the ether.
My fourth’s in the ether. Has no brain, but it’s clever.
My fifth is a test. In last, but also the best.
My sixth is in fast. It’s a replay of the last.

To solve this puzzle, look at the letters that either appear in more than one key word in a sentence (or only in one if a clue suggests it’s not in a word), which are in bold type below. I've struck through the words that the correct letter doesn't appear in. So:
My first is in Ovaltine, Cocoa and Hot Chocolate.
My second’s in blimp, and it’s also quite limp.
My third is in never, but won’t appear in the ether.
My fourth’s in the ether. Has no brain, but it’s clever.
My fifth is a test. In last, but also the best.
My sixth is in fast. It’s a replay of the last.
The sixth clue is of a different form, and is used because there is a repeat letter. Some clues can allow more letters others; the second clue above leaves several.

After a bit of working out, we see the word can be made from the following:

O/A
L/I/M/P
N/V
E
S/T
S/T

The answer is ‘Alness’.

Rules:

  • Once the station is correctly guessed, the first person to guess correctly sets the next riddle, unless they declare an open floor.
  • It can be as cryptic, as easy/hard, as long or as short as they want.
  • If someone’s due to set a riddle, if they haven’t after 48 hours, it’s an open floor.
  • Rhymes are not compulsory!

If you have any questions, please PM one of the Quizmasters.

Here's the first puzzle, also from backontrack:

My first is a thing, but it doesn't cling.
My second is anonymous, but it's not in ominous.
My third is in brain, but is not in insane.
My fourth won't illuminate, but it might ruminate.
My fifth is not in riddle, but is definitely quite sozzled.
My sixth is ingenius. Not in inventor, or giant, but in genus.
My seventh, however, is in giant and genus.
My last's not in last, but is the same as the first.

STATIONS MUST BE UK NATIONAL RAIL STOPS ONLY. NO METROLINK, UNDERGROUND, DLR, TRAMS OR GLASGOW SUBWAYS. LONDON OVERGROUND IS PERMITTED.

Cheers, OxtedL.

It is indeed Habrough.

My first is an answer, but isn't in dance.
My second is alive, but it's not in joke.
My third is in zucchini, not eggplant, or aubergine.
My last is in cake. Don't make a mistake.

Short + sweet because going away and need a succinct post.

(Won't have an internet connection. I'll be back in 3 weeks.)

I'd say WICK but I'd also say the last line implies to me that the last letter is C rather than one of AKE.

Open floor.

If there is no reply for conformation of Wick, here is another one to whet your appetite:

My first is in man, but not in a can
My second can be found in train, Spain and plane
My third could be worth looting, but you won't find it in Tooting
My fourth could seem quite vain, but there's no need to be a pain
My fifth is not found in Birmingham, but you will find be in Euston.
My sixth is in Carbon and Nitrogen, but can't be found in Cyanogen
Finally you reach the seventh, but by no means is last.

I believe it's Malvern. But obviously it would have to be between Malvern Link and Great Malvern.

Open floor if correct.

Yes it is Malvern (I forgot about the two stations when thinking of a random place) so you are correct.

This has got to be open by now. Don't want this game to sink, so...

My first you can smite, but not in smile (though in fright).
My second's in tankard, but it's not in hard.
My third is in tongue, but not in organ or ton.
My fourth is my fifth, the are each the same.
My fifth is in strong, but won't win a gong.
My last is in quay, but not in queer.

I'm thinking STURRY but like Paul S I think the first letter should be T.

My first you can smite and smile (though not in fright)?

I think differently because if the first is in both smite and smile, there is no T in smile so with a bit of working I think the possibilities for the first one are S, M and E

That's because, to make STURRY fit, I changed the original clue from:

My first you can smite, but not in smile (though in fright).

even without the fright bit, this can only be a T as that is the only letter that is in smite and not smile.

Oops, you are right...

My third is in hay, today and everyday
My fourth is, ahem, one of them
For my fifth go to hell and all’s well
For my sixth he’ll be right but not in hindsight
A seventh? Why? You’ll deny my reply!

Bramley?

I don't understand the seventh and I think the 6th is R but I don't know any stations that would fit the rest.

It is Bramley.

The sounds of all the letters are also in the clues, if you use my Northern accent. Which you may or may not do.

Bee aah hay (a)hem hell he why

6th is e which is in he'll (he'll be right ie one of the letters of he'll will be correct and also 'e' will be right) but not hindsight

7th is Y which is in why you'll deny my and reply

Maybe a bit dodgy I know but at least all the letters are there!

My first is in carp but not in bream
My second not clotted, but is in cream
My third is in table, but not in a chair
I do hope these clues are guiding you there
My fourth is in steam, and also in diesel
My fifth is in stoat, but not in a weasel
My sixth is in pastoral but not in urban
My last, not in hat, but it is in a turban
When you work it out and these letters you've filled
My whole is a town greatly famed for a guild

My first is north-westerley, but not in Timperley.
My second is heroic, (it's also in stoic).
My third is derived, but not from chives.
My fourth you won't know; it's both fast and slow.
My fifth is in fourth* but it's not very coarse.
My sixth is in Woodstock and Snoopy, but not Lucy.
My seventh will rotate, but won't oscillate.
My eighth's not in muzzle, but in mustard (that's a puzzle†)
My last is the not last, it's the same as the clue first.

*The word 'fourth', not the fourth clue.
†The clue is 'a puzzle', not the letter.

No-one attempted a new one? You people make me sick. :p

I actually really liked yours. It was really fun to do, but unfortunately, Fishquinn got there first.

I've also just realised that technically it is IanD next to set the clue, because I never confirmed his 'Wick' posting earlier today due to him being away. So Wick is right, and so it is IanD's go, unless we can declare 'open floor' and try to convince Paul to do one...

Thanks for that.

I did open the floor on WICK as I was going away too.
