I have an off-peak return from Huddersfield to Burnage.
On the outward journey would I be allowed to take the train to Levenshulme and walk to Burnage from there?
The price to both stations is the same.

What date is your outbound journey?

This week, there seems to be RRBs from Huddersfield to Stockport. You'd be able to take that, then continue to Levenshulme to stop short.

You might also be able to take the parliamentary ghost train at 8:30 on Saturdays between Stalybridge and Stockport, but that's pushing you about a bit...

Friday 23rd.
We were thinking Huddersfield to Piccadilly to Levenshulme.
Walk, via hostelries, to Burnage.
Then Burnage > MAN > HUD for the return.

You wouldn't be allowed to go via Piccadilly to Levenshulme on your ticket. The only option would be taking the 1 hour rail replacement to Stockport, then getting a service to Levenshulme.

If you put in your ticket info (Huddersfield to Burnage) into the forum's site, then disable split tickets, and put in via Levenshulme (or just click this link), you can see the valid itinerary it generates for a Huddersfield to Burnage ticket:

Huddersfield to Stockport rail replacement
Stockport to Levenshulme (where you'd stop short)
Levenshulme to Manchester Stations
Manchester to Burnage

Despite the tickets costing the same, it's not valid by default, and it's up to you to hope staff would be pragmatic about the situation if you chose to go via Piccadilly. An excess wouldn't be suitable, I don't believe, as it's not a change of route, nor over-distance as you don't even pass through Burnage to get to Levenshulme.

Why not just buy an on-the-day advance ticket from Manchester Piccadilly to Levenshulme? Not that expensive and there's normally four trains per hour to choose from. Or pay £2 for the short hop on the 192 bus.

Might well be a more elegant way of doing what you want, but at least the small additional fare of around £2 avoids (i) the possibility of you being PF'd for not having a valid ticket between Manchester and Levenshulme or (ii) spending an hour on a rail replacement bus bouncing around between Huddersfield and Stockport, although this may still be necessary if TPE's service to Manchester tomorrow is its usual sub-optimal best!

Thanks for the advice all.
After reading another thread we ended up adding a £3.20 Plus-Bus to our tickets.
