No offense HSTEd, but Shivering Sands is roughly the same distance from London as Cambridge or Brighton. You would be better off building a Kansai style airport off the coast of Folkstone; at least HS1 is close by.

Using Folkstone amplifies the problems caused by the intrusion of flights in the approach and takeoff patterns into European airspace.

Additionally there is far more scope for a ship to ram into an airport built in the Channel than in the middle of the Thames Estuary (which is not really a major shipping lane any longer)

Exactly! Although if you want to do anything at Folkstone, you might as well upgrade Manston, which would be a lot cheaper, but equally far from London.

Actually, on thinking about it, the Goodwins are possibly available for some sort of development, although I wouldn't recommend it.

Manston is too far from HS1 to gain any real benefit from it so would require the same rail link facilities as Shivering Sand, but has the other pitfall to Heathrow Expansion as well. (That being hemmed in by developments, at best you would get a new Gatwick if you want to do it without demolishing a village)
